  1. Yesterday I added a track bike to my (insert preferred collective noun for
bikes here) of bikes. It is a brand new Raceline frame (62cm seat post)
with Dura Ace cranks, Miche rear hub (easier cog changes), Hugi front hub,
Mavic SUP singles. Bought it from a guy named Peter who's dad owns a bike
shop and who it sounds like was a pretty high level competitive cyclist
until his back started playing up. He was a nice guy and we ended up
chatting for quite a while before the money and bike changed hands. We then
went to the shed and he threw in 4 chainrings of various sizes, a handful of
cogs, a handful of chains, a tool box (with all the stuff in it), and
another set of track wheels (singles) to use as a training set. The wheels
were not included in the original auction on ebay (no bidders) but he threw
them in for nothing after we had agreed on a price for the bike......what a
    guy!!!!

I will be putting the Bates Racing frame that I have had for quite some time
but never gotten around to getting all the parts for up on Ebay in the near
future. (see towards bottom of http://tinyurl.com/y982v5 - need to update
site as I no longer have the first or last ones listed but I do have 5
others!!!) I will probably have to sell one of my other bikes too as I
think 7 bikes is pushing it a bit with SWMBO......might be the Cecil Walker.

Can't wait until this cycling trial that I am doing finishes so that I can
get it out on the track for a spin.

Does anyone know what nights the various track clubs ride on out the NE
suburbs of Melb (ie. DISC, Blackburn, ???).

Blackburn's track roster is on the Blackburn website :

    www.bbn.org.au

DISC bookings and times are on the CSV website.

You will need at a minimum a "ride it" licence to train, but if you
want to race, you'll need a full racing licence. Some clubs will tout
a useless 'club licence" as a cheap option, but it's *only* legal to
use at club-only races, which is none of them.

Must pull proverbial out of proverbial and get around to idly loitering around at DISC, considering it's just up the road. *NB: BYO catering, chairs & bog paper ...

Thanks for the info. I have been out to DISC once before for a spin on one
of the club bikes. From memory it was a Thursday night so I guess it was
with the Northcote club. I ended up running into Geoff, an occassional a.b
poster and BR rider and he basically gave me a few tips and helped me to get
started. Can't wait to have a go at it.....my biggest problem is going to
be selecting a gear given the number of chainring/cog combinations that I
    have!!!

I seem to recall a while ago that someone in here mentioned an outdoor
velodrome at Hawthorn that had been resurfaced??? Would like some details
on the condition of the track and where it is if possible....anyone got the
    good oil??

Next to the freeway along the Gardiners Creek bike path. Between Toorak & Glenferrie Roads. Near the hockey grounds. It is a pretty basic velodrome though. Not very steep.

Here's a gear chart, if you don't have one yet :

It's not a closed velodrome, I would suggest unless you're pretty
competent, not riding a track bike on it. Kids, dogs, triathletes ride
on it ... As a general rule, I don't like to mix fixed gear bikes with
freewheel bikes on a velodrome, at my training sessions I enforce it,
    but not everyone does everywhere.

For outdoor use, I'm using an 88 inch gear which seems pretty good for
    most general outdoor velodrome racing.

Blackburn run a beginners session on Thursday nights at the BBN
velodrone, might be worth attending, and there's races this Saturday
    from 2-5pm.

    * Note: May be a slight understatement.

You're not a trackie yet, then you will be changing gears for every
race, even changing both chain and cog between races to fine tune 0.3
    of an inch gear!

  10. Unfortunately, I've become frightened of my track bike, and it's sat unused for a few months now as a result.

In the work carpark on the way home (a few months ago), I brushed a pole with my arm, pushing the bars off center a little. Alas, my foot then came round and wedged against the back of the front tyre. Being a fixed wheel, of course, there was no possibility of pulling my foot back. Also being a track frame, there was heaps of toe overlap.

The result was that the bike, with me on it, rotated quite rapidly around the front wheel, and I hit the road (still attached to the bike) fairly hard. It would have been spectacular had anyone seen it, but alas nobody did.

Luckily I didn't break anything, and the rashes and bruises have all healed up. The bike suffered barely a scratch. I've ridden it a couple of times since, but am overly nervous, so for the most part it's now just gathering dust 🙁

    Cheers,

    Suzy

Normally I'd do that midrace 🙂

if you have some spare drop bars or track bars and a brake caliper, cables etc, and the front fork is drilled (most are) and pick up a freewheel 16 sprocket for the back ( and an on/off tool), you can get some good workouts off the track using the bikeas a training machina...its fun and not as hairy when you get started, good for hill intervals and sprint drills...just remember when you do get on the track to ensure that the act of coasting never occurs...requires the unconcious "thought" of coasting to be expunged from your headly processes...

    welcome to the fray
