  1. Since Performance bought out Nashbar they maintain the fiction of 2 companies by continuing to
    publish 2 catalogs.

My beef? Just combine them. There is some but not 100% overlap in what they carry and it's just not
worth sending in 2 orders given the ship costs.

How's that? Doesn't sound like too much of a rant...

Could be, but I find that Nashbar has better sales on some items.

    Hmmm....

Perhaps you could also suggest that insightful strategy to General Motors. Just think of the real
estate that would be freed up, the decrease in ad space cluttering our newspapers, increased stadium
    billboard availability. etc.

I disagree that it is a "fiction" that they are two companies. Although they have a common owner,
they are run independently (different products, prices, personnel, order centers, etc.)

I would prefer that it would stay that way, as it gives me more choices and more opportunities to
    pick up a bargain.

  5. IMHO, the two of those catalogs are still marketed to different bike demographics. And since SuperGo
is also owned by Performance you got to consider what they are marketed towards. Here are my feeling
    on their marketing targets

Nashbar - the older cyclists, those inclined to touring, the commuters Performance - the
road/mountain racers and want to be racers, the competitive rider types SuperGo - mountain bikers,
free riders and mountain bikes that have discovered road bikes

Are there overlaps in these demographics, yes. Are there examples of stuff in each catalog that
    contradict my categories, yes.

You also have to think there might be contracts and legal reasons the catalogs and stores are kept
separate. Also the allow the consumer to feel there is competition when there is not. ex "The San
Diego SuperGo angered me with the bill for my headset repair so from now on I'll just go to the
    Performance store down the street."

I assume so day when Pefor-Nash-SuperGo gets a new CEO from a Banking corp or something that wants
to slash costs and maximize profits they will kill all the overlapping stores, the multiple catalogs
    and so on.

    Dear Puff,

And what about that son-of-a-[censored] Stephen King publishing books as Richard Bachmann!

FWI understand, the marketing of the PBS group has Nashbar at the bottom with sales/low priced
stuff/PBS in the mid-grade/Supergo at the high end. If you look at the catalogs, you'll see that I
may not be too far off.

I know Supergo has a bunch of Campy10v stuff in stock, as well as a bunch of nice wheelsets, Euro
clothing, etc. PBS stocks their branded stuff, some Campy, not much Euro clothing. I haven't seen a
Nashbar catalog in a while, so can't comment on them.

Think Old Navy and that group. I don't remember off the top of my head which three companies are all
owned by the people that own Old Navy, but they've got all three levels covered too.

PBS used to be the 300# gorilla in the bicycling marketplace, now they're a 600# gorilla! There's
actually a lot of room for LBSes if they just concentrate on what they do best: bike sales and
service. leave the cheap parts and most of the clothing to SuperNashPBS.

Just my $.02 from having run a PBS for several years.

Interesting that I just bought a set of the true shimano-compatible mtb pedals from Nashbar for $20,
while the same pedals were at Performance for twice that. Maybe Nashbar are trying to get the MTB
market from the other two with lower prices.

I got to figure that at some point they will probably try to consolidate their operations and
this stuff will end, but they will wait some period to avoid pissing people off about their
quasi-monopoly of the mail order market, not that anyone seems to care about enforcing
    Sherman anymore.

I wonder if Performance, Nashbar and Supergo are all separately chartered as approved Shimano
    internet sales outlets.

Yeah but doesn't Lexus own Toyota? Or is it Toyota that owns Lexus? I think its a matter of establishing the high price line and the value line. But, don't really get what your beef is with that.

Lexus was created by Toyota to go into the luxury-car business. I think it's the funniest thing
around to imagine people paying $60,000 for a Toyota.

    But I wouldn't mind paying 20K for a Lexus! 🙂

I guess Puff has a beef with Lexus, Toyota, Gap, Banana Republic, and any company that owns another company. This is a great example of why people need to be required to go to college.

Ditto! What are they thinking? My house cost $78,000 and it at least will appreciate in value.
