Hello there. I have been wanting to get a road bike (the lean down forward, curled handlebar type-of-bike) sorry if that makes an idiot out of anyone but "road" bike to people means those leisure single-speed bikes too. I see many people around the town riding their bikes and I have always imagined that would be really fun to do; plus I'm a very impressionable person and my great mentor rides these road bikes (Competitively too, I think).
I tell you this to give you an idea of what I might be hinting at but have no idea on. I am very new to this, and I only hope to do this for my own enjoyment without any sort of contests. But I would like to have a good bike that would do some great damage without getting into it too much (In case I don't like this as much as I think that I would) but being able to build upon the bike if I do enjoy it (For I read that you could, with time, create a custom bike without ever having to completely get rid of your bike or trade it in).
I want to be able to ride the bike to school, because gas is getting more and more expensive, and it could be something I could take to college to get around campus in when possible (to save even more money).
So, what I want to know from you is this:
1) What is the sizing and fitting way of going about finding a good bike?
2) Is there a good bike to start with?
3) Should I be concerned with a specific speed? I know most are around 10 or so, but I have seen ads for more and less than that...
4) I will look in the classifieds, but what do you suggest the best route for finding a relatively cheap bike that I could start with?
Thanks!
