Definitely something to take care with - especially if you have pets
like birds, who are very sensitive to the fumes. Never gave it a
thought until a friend's very cool parakeet keeled over after she set
the oven to self-clean on a chilly day without thinking to move his
cage or open windows. Needless to say, she felt just awful.

I still clean it by hand. :-P

A PITA I know, but I just can't stand the consequences of using the

Are you talking about a self clean oven, you don't use
that? Yikes, I wouldn't be without it. If you've used
oven cleaner on it, it's probably a moot point anyway
because the finish is ruined, that's what I've read.

Are you talking about a self clean oven, you don't use

Yes, I have a self-cleaning oven and I don't use the self-clean cycle.
AFAIK, the oven cleaner I've had to use from time to time has not hurt
it...

I use a lot of preventative measures to keep from dirtying it up.
I often roast in a dutch oven, or "tent" items with foil. I also cover
the grills with foil prior to roasting. That catches most of the junk to
keep it from hitting the oven floor.

The first time I ever did try the self-cleaning cycle, I swore I'd
never, ever do it again. :-P

that I should try the self-cleaning cycle on mine when the weather gets

The first time I used mine (when the oven was new), it did stink up
the place ... there was some coating on it that had to burn off.
Yeah, have a fan handy and the place ventilated.

Portuguese to 'son-of-a-[censored]' into English.
This started a discussion between us: my husband had always thought it meant

Son of a female dog. There are curse words in Polish and French as
well, referring to someone being related to a dog. Also in German,
"Du Sauhund!" (You Pig/dog!) is something I seem to remember.

I know what you mean! I have 2 ovens but only one is a self cleaner,
so I make sure the messy stuff is done in the self cleaning one.

updating/remodeling. I wondered why the previous owners had a
bathroom type vent fan in the ceiling near the oven, but I can tell
you w/o equivocation now and after yesterday - I'm thinking of
reinstalling one.

Do you have the ductwork for exhaust?

You have a double wall unit? My mother has the same which has an
exhaust fan on the wall right above the top oven, with a little hood
that pulls out when she wants to use the fan.

Here is a good one for you. :-)
Since we build an insulated sun porch off of the kitchen, the kitchen
window was no longer of much use. So, we installed a double vent fan in
the window. It's right over the sink.

Now I can slice onions with no tears, and it's right across from the
stove (my kitchen is small) so it vents the entire kitchen better!

I cleaned my oven last week after baking a large volume of chicken parts
which spattered all over the place. My stove has a large downdraft fan
which vents to the side yard.

Near the end of the cycle I had to do an errand which took maybe 10
minutes. When I drove back into the driveway I could smell the chicken.
The whole side yard smelled wonderful, like the parking lot of a fried
chicken restaurant. And at the end of the driveway was the neighborhood
red fox, sniffing hard to try to find the source of the yummy smell!
