You could take the brakes off!

Or, you can create a little more space by fixing lights underneath the
bars instead of on top, thus allowing adjacent brackets to be fitted
slightly closer together. Bells can sometimes be mounted on the stem
rather than the bar.

Before I became a dynamo converteee, my LED backup light used the same
bracket as my main light, and was simply substituted if needed. You
may of course be using both lights simultaneously.

I'm not terribly impressed with the minoura space grip. The clamp is made of
poxy thin metal that breaks or stretches before getting tight enough. The
partial workround is to put an old bit of inner tube between bracket and
bar, but even this leads to the bar shifting in the event of a bump.

I have my SMART twin headlamps mounted on the space grip to get them clear
of the bar bag. I have had to remove the poxy spacegrip fitting and replace
it with the clamp from an old broken bell.

So, on the bars, apart from brakes/gears I have a ping bell, computer, smart
lights (twin 2.4/10W) HRM (sometimes) and have had the two lamps from the
knightlight as well. Plus the klickfix mount for the bar bag. And the bar
ends.

Cars? In a queue? That would be rush hour here. I've just been out for a 20
mile ride on road and seen about ten cars maximum once out of the city
(north of the ring road).

I can't be arsed to find wider bars. And it still wouldn't solve the problem
of mounting the lights above the bar bag. I did make a spacegrip-a-like
before they were on the market out of a piece of wooden dowel, a U bolt and
about six inches of aluminium curtain track. I replaced it with the space
grip as I mistakenly thought it would do a better job.

bars. No problems at all. I didn't hesitate to buy another one for my
second bike.

I've replaced the alloy tubes with longer plastic ones to use two
Lumicycle lamps and a Smart Polaris without having to squash them all up.

Anyone used the Deda Space Cockpit? How good, how big? Looks like a
lighter and smaller job that should be nice on a road bike.

Yup - I use one on Gino, and I have two Cateye HL-EL300 lights on it. It's rock
solid - and the lights aren't the lightest ones around. So I have on my
handlebars computer mount, barbag mount & the space bar for the lights...

I haven't seen the spacegrip as I myself have the swinggrip. The
bracket may be different. The bracket on my swing grip seems
substantial enough. The design of the unit is such that it will mount
on bars, horizontal portion of stem, or a sufficiently exposed
vertical portion of the stem.

Well, I found it [censored]. I managed to break the clamp band twice (low tensile
strength) and it deformed and worked loose constantly.

This is on steel handlebars that may be a little bit narrower than road
bars.

And as I said, the adaptions I made (take an old bell and butcher it
appropriately, add a rubber pad) have worked fine in keeping it steady.

Having examined Space Grips as a possible method of mounting lights on the
front derailleur post of the Speedmachine, and being unimpressed, I used an
old
Ahead-stylee stem and chunk of old seat post to achieve a similar, but
bullet-proof, solution. This worked well enough for me to confect a similar
gadget for mounting auxiliary lights on the Trice.

Now all I need to do is to amass enough tuits to actually ride the latter
after dark...

I have two Spacegrips on different bikes and put a couple of turns of pvc
insulating tape under the clamps. Apart from protecting the bars I get a non
slip fitting without over tightening.
