  1. My friend has a big yellow lab named Mischief that looves to
ride with us. Lately he's learned a new behaviour. If we
stop riding to rest or chit-chat for the least amount of
time he starts barking at us loudly for us to shut up and
keep moving. It's hysterical. He's wearing us out! He
especially likes to race us on the downhills and knows where
the top of all of them are.

We've had this discussion before, good trail dogs are really
fun, all the rest can be a PITA.

TO CARRY BACK MY BEER. I'm off on beer run.

Yeah. A real pain in the ass.

Just like equestrians, hikers, bird watchers, small
children, slow-moving reptiles, and less skilled riders.
Basically everyone who isn't *me* should just stay the hell
    off the trails.

I don't mind the small children, they are much easier to
    roll over than a lab.

    Yeah, but they yelp louder.

There are a lot of cool dogs, but I think Labs are probably
at or very near the top.

There was this dude that used to surf Malibu all the time.
His dog would kick it on the beach and watch the towel and
car keys. Sometimes he would get restless and swim out into
    the surf to say hello to his master. That dog had no fear;
He didn't care how big the waves were.

I wouldn't trust that dog to carry my beer. Did I mention
    he's a downhiller! ;^)

Mine don't. My labs are much louder than my kids.

Mine don't. My labs are much louder than my kids.

My kids are louder than the BCs, but the JRT is louder than
    all of them together.

Our lab got hammered at the beach when she was a pup, about
a 6 ft wave, ever since then she would bark at anything that
remotely resembled a wave, even little ripples of water
    running down the driveway.

    Do *not* get me started.

gabrielle (almost bought it today because of someone's
    goofy mutt)

"Good" trail dogs are the ones under their owners' control.
I prefer 100% positive control, just because owners often
have a rosy idea of what their dogs will and will not do
    under trail situations.

Dogs don't yield to uphill riders. That's the one that
usually kills my buzz when dogs are out and about.

Dogs love to [censored] right in the middle of the trail. Maybe
this is not universal, but damn - can't go ten feet in the
summer without finding another doggy landmine waiting. Gotta
run fenders to keep it of me. (This has been much less of a
problem when I get over 5 miles away from the trailhead.)

Dog owners can be total idiots. Dog has head and tail
lowered, hackles raised, and has a nearly-subvocal growl.
I'm off bike, with bike between me and dog. Owner comes
round the bend and shouts "he's

all over me. I carry an extendable baton now, just for a
little persuasion, should it be necessary.

Dogs at the trailhead who want to sniff every part of me, my
car, [censored] on my tires (bike tires included) and owners who
think this is acceptable, or worse, funny. I tell you what,
I'll [censored] on your bike, and then you tell me how funny that
is. I expect dogs to jump up and put their muddy paws on me
and my gear - it happens so often that I get down to their
level so they don't. The enthusiastically friendly ones are
merely annoying, especially if I'm tired post-ride and want
my shower/BEvERage. If your dog is jumping all over me, and
on the side of my car, etc, mover your lazy ass over here
    and round the mongrel up.

I love dogs, and have had dogs all my life. I love other
people's dogs, and am friendly with dogs that their owners
have said "s/he's not friendly to strangers." I just plain
    "get" dogs.

who thinks only of him/herself and not the other people that
have to deal with the dog's doggy behavior. I don't give a
rat's ass how well-trained your dog is - keep the thing on a
leash. If I had a dime for every time I heard a dog owner
say "he's never done that before," I wouldn't have to work.
If I had my druthers, I druther use my baton on the [censored]
owner than the poor dog who really doesn't know any better.
Except it's legal to hit the dog, but illegal to hit the
    owner. Dammit.
