my first half marathon, advice requested

While doing a 12 mile run is a helpful indicator, it doesn't give you the
final word on whether you're ready. I've done 6 marathons myself and I
haven't gone into any of them unprepared, but I know people who have. My
advice is, if you're prepared to accept a certain amount of pain, and are
realistic about how fast you can run it in, you should be able to finish
(there's no shame in being reduced to walking).

Relax. If you got through your 12 miler, you'll be fine. Just don't
think you can go out and suddenly run the thing faster.

The biggest mistake new runners make is getting caught up in the
excitement and going out way too fast. It'll haunt you big time at the
end.

Find a grandmother pushing a bay stroller - twins would be ideal. Stay
behind her for the first mile, then find a comfortable pace. Then back
off a notch. <g>

Seriously, lay back the first mile and run slower than you feel like
running. See what the first mile is and compare it with your training
pace. If you're faster than that, slow down to that pace.

it's a flat course.

Don't spend all day Saturday walking up and down the board walk and
then watch the bands until midnight. <g>

Carry a water bottle with you and sip all day, staying hydrated. Eat
moderately and don't experiment with the sushi.

You should be fine. First, a bit of runner geekness. Your goal is a
common one. Not DNF (did not finish), not DFL (you can figure that one
out yourself).

Second, my guess is you've done your research and know what to do. Now
just go out and do it. If I had to pick one piece of standard advice
to be sure to follow: don't do anything different on the big day.
Don't eat/drink anything you aren't used to. Don't wear any
clothes/shoes you haven't tranied in.

Finally, if this is a big race, be prepared for an annoyingly slow
start until things thin out. Just accept it.

When my longest run was 13 miles a marathon seemed impossible.
When my longest run was 26 miles 50 miles seemed impossible.
When my longest run was 50 miles 100 miles seemed impossible.
Now 50 miles seems like a nice long training run.

Just run aid station to aid station and the distance will take care of
itself!

I think BD misread "half-marathon" for "marathon".
You've trained enough to try the half length.
The full length has the special problem of exceeding the regular runner's
sugar storage system, inducing an exquisite type of pain.

DISGUSTED? Weeks ago, John Zogby pointed out
on his website that 47% of democrats don't just disagree with Bush--they
personally despise him. Among undecideds, Bush's job approval rating is 30%.
Thus, Zogby gives Kerry a 80-100 point advantage in the electoral college. In
4 years, we have gone from the largest federal budget surplus we have ever had
to the largest deficit we have ever had; From the largest job growth we have
ever had, to the first president since Herbert Hoover to have a net decline of
jobs during his tenure. Investors have done worse than during the Wategate
years.

Bush's Chairman of the Council of Economic advisors believes that outsourcing
is good for the country (don't laugh, he said it); Certainly, we could find
someone in Bangalore, India who could do a better job.
