  1. I guess we will do one big catchup on a lot of the family runs. Daniel will
be 16 in October and lettered in cross country and track as a freshman. He
grows a bit here and a bit there and runs solid. He didn't do much road
racing this summer but ran a lot with the cross country team. He loves
running and has helped the team score a lot of points.

Russell is 13 (in case you don't remember, he is the crazy one) and is
absolutely obsessed with running. He won the state of Utah USATF
championship for the youth division at 800 meters (with a 2:26) and that was
his third race of the day. He also took two thirds in the 1500 and 3000
meter races respectively. He is a 19:30 5k pr person but if he ever learned
pacing, he would be dangerous. His strategy is simple; run as hard as you
can for as long as you can. He will drive you nuts but is sure fun to take
to races. I think he won his age group in every race he ran this summer.

Henry is nine and finished the Moab 5 miler in 44 min. and change and was
really doing well in all his races (mostly track) until he crashed his
bicycle and broke his leg big time!!! They prepped him for surgery to put
in screws and plates but the x-rays ended up showing a big break in the
fibula along with 11 smaller fractures. The tibia however was bowed but not
broken. Let's say that he was easier to take care after the first week of
Percoset and after I could quit carrying him everywhere!! He will likely
end up having been in a cast for 12 weeks which pretty much sucks. It sucks
because he was doing so well in running and basketball.

My wife has only improved with age and will do her second half marathon of
the summer this week. She is good for a little age group hardware every now
and then but she could care less. She is a good runner simply because she
puts in the miles and she does that to stay in shape and stay sane.

My little six year-old girl ran summer track and did well at the 400 (1:52)
and 800 meter races (4:14) though she is so social and she enjoyed track
just to be around other people. She runs hard and has fun but she has 8000
other interests but I think she runs a little bit because we are such a
    running family.

Anyway, I would be rich if it weren't for running shoes, entry fees, and
traveling to races but what the hay, you only go through life once.

Geez, now we know why the volume here is down 😉 Seriously, I'd been
wondering what you folks were up to.

Cross country sounds like more fun to me!

Wish Henry a speedy recovery and hopefully he'll be back out there.

That's really fantastic to have mom / wife running well.

And yet another 🙂 Will you be fielding your own cross-country team?

WOW. Thanks for the update, TenKMan. Sounds like your whole family
really is into running and enjoying running and family time together.

Ah, you rock bigtime Dot. I finally set up a few killfiles and my
experience here is much better. I think Mike Tennent, Studio (David) and
Ozzie haven't been keeping up on their end of the posting bargain and I
really enjoy reading your's and Teresa's (Tucson) posts among others. I
even miss that crusty New England runner that had a baby (Jenn i fer). BTW,
what other forums have you found useful as I did read that you check out
other forums? I have really taken to trail running more when I can do that
odd run on my own. I also bought a 1700cc road motorcycle and have fun
riding that to work too. I will probably get to Anchorage in the next year
to another conference and will look forward to running along the coast.
Thanks for the good words and good luck on the trails.

I will post the results of the USATF cc season as well as the high school
    season.

    Good luck.

I use RW (ultra/trail, training, beginners, shoes) although their forum
software is really poor. (I think there's a couple sections that aren't
as good as the others.) There's several other Alaskans there, which adds
some relevance for me. Several people (past and present) from here are
also there. The ultra / trail group includes trails of any length
(doesn't have to be ultra), adventure runs, etc, and is a pretty
    positive group.

I use snowshoe mag forums in winter, but they don't have a critical mass
yet. At various times I'll also lurk in Coolrunning ultra (heavy overlap
with a couple other places that I regularly visit), hillrunner.com,
TrailRunner mag, and Peak Performance message boards. I'll also use some
mt bike groups and nordic ski for some gear related information, and
Alaskan trail groups boards to stay abreast of local trail issues.

What - you don't run to work 😉

If you let me know when you're up here, maybe we could hook up - if I'm
around. I just retired end of June so have been wandering farther afield
in my running and probably busier now than when I worked 🙂

Thanks. We look forward to the results. And thanks again for updating us
    on your family's running achievements.

  7. PS: you might find Sue Norwood's AT journal interesting since she
discusses some training, etc. Actually, you might find it interesting
    period.

  8. Your kid jogs cross-country? Gee, that's a shock. Math geeks get laid
    more than team joggers.
