Is there anything like this--woods, hills, terrain, etc all in one ride,
closer to Las Vegas? I've got some friends my girlfriend and I will be
visiting in the fall, who live in Vegas. While Bootleg Canyon is fairly
close, and I do want to ride it, I prefer riding in forests on mountains to
riding exclusively in open/non-shaded desert. Bull Ranch-cow canyon seems a
great compromise, but I can see from Mapquest its like an 8 hour drive. Any
suggestions?

Dan, Las Vegas is in the middle of the desert. You will be hard pressed to
find any mounatins or forests within a reasonable distance.

Penny,
As much as the stories I've heard about rides at Bootleg Canyon are
compelling, the idea of spending 3 or more hours riding in open sun (no
trees) is not very appealing. I guess we'll try to do all the rides from 6am
to 10am, but the video from Reno sure looks more appealing than the still
photographs I have seen from Bootleg....;-)

There should be some trails around Mt. Charleston by Vegas. You should be
able to get some info from the local bike shops. If you're willing to travel
8 hrs to MTB then I would suggest Mammoth and Lake Tahoe. Though Reno can be
fun riding for the locals, Lake Tahoe is much better.

The Spring Mountains in the Toiyabe National Forest are in the middle of
the desert too. They're about 50-60 miles outside of Las Vegas. Weird
eco-system because of being surrounded by desert. At 10+k feet, they're
considerably cooler than the Las Vegas area. There's even a ski resort
there. I only remember it because I had to visit it for work once.

Mt Charleston just outside of town. Forests and skiing in winter (sorta).
Didn't ride MTBs when I lived there, so I don't know if there's any rides
out that way, put it's worth checking into.
