  1. I'm still on the rims my MTB came with so I'm pretty much
    clueless about MTB rims.

A mate has a knackered ZAC19 rim and I'm after suggestions
    for an appropriate replacement.

The only conditions are, that it needs to be disc-compatible
    and 32 holes.

It's used mainly for commuting with a bit of light XC too.

    Any takers?

    Cheers.

Oops - correction, it's actually a Mavic X223 that needs
    replacing.

Why not head to the LBS and get the current Mavic or Velocity equivalent?

Just ask for a disc-specific, 32h, xc rim.. there's probably one listed on the Mavic or Velocity website? From the requirements
    he doesn't need anything special.

I'm still running my original rims and they are just cheapie
Araya GP710s. My SS has ZAC19s on it.

I should've mentioned, this only came about late today so no
    LBS opportunity yet 🙂

Just thought I'd ask since I couldn't see anything promising
on the regular websites. MTB rims seem quite expensive
compared to road rims I've bought in the past.

I wouldn't normally name names straight away but he was told
by Lawrencia that the wheel could not be trued and that it
must be replaced, at a cost of about $250.

Needless to say, I'm not convinced and $250 for a rim and
rebuild seems excessive to say the least 🙂

    Ahh.. cool.

    Check: http://www.cecilwalker.com.au/category15_1.htm
Prices are for pairs and are probably cheaper elsewhere.

    Run away!!!
    How bad is this wheel?
Does it really need a new rim?
Perhaps take it to a bike shop that doesn't just flog bikes to
    time-scarce yuppies...

$250 for a 'whole wheelset' from Phantom here:
(Sun Ditchwitch / Shimano 574 Hub wheelset):
"Strong, disc ready wheelset. Perfect upgrade material or for a second wheelset."

    Thanks Ritch.

As it happens, Lawrencia have once again proven themselves
    to be lying thieves.

I had a look at the wheel today and admittedly it has a
slight flat spot, but it's otherwise OK and has now been
    trued just fine.

    Cheers.
