Is this the climb used at the end of the "Hell of the west" handicap run by the Melton CC (I think) ?
That climb was so tough, no [censored], before the race people were driving down to the bottom and putting sneakers by the side of the road, with full knowledge they were going to be walking, not riding up it.

G'day Rman,
thats the one!....the Northern combine race it every year. Most of the A & B graders struggle to the top...few C & D graders have any chance. (especially fat [censored] like me!). I've had 3 goes & haven't got there yet on 39x25. its an absolute [censored] of a climb. When we race it, its at the end of an undulating 70k handicap....some sadist put the finish at the top!. I remember reports from last year when the girls did this course...most of the O/S riders hadn't seen it before & badly underestimated the gearing needed....lots of swearing & running up hills & more than a few tears,

Hi Rickster,
I have attempted this climb twice now. The first time I had no hope. I was 90Kg and had a 39/23 (started walking about 1/4 way up. The second time I was 86Kg had a 39/25. This time I made it. At one stage I was doing about 4kph (nearly fell off). I knew it was going to be tough when my car struggled to get to the top.

Map ref is 511 D2. The climb is only about 1km long so you cant compare it to BawBaw or any other mountain. It is just so steep in certain areas that you are doing about 5km/hr. It is located at the end of the Brisbane Ranges just out of Bacchus Marsh. It is the finish of a race called the Hell of the West. Not a good place to try and sprint for the line.

G'day,
Actually, its probably closer to 2km in length....the difficulty arises because it rises about 2km in that length..........(not really, but it seems that way). When we race it this year, (Mid May usually), I'm going to try & measure the distance & gradient with my S720. Of course this is difficult to do when you are WALKING!...I'll report the 'actuals' for all who are interested! (yes I will be leaving the runners at about the half way point of the climb before the race starts)....Hmmm I'm thinking maybe 39x39 will get me up....LOL,

The photos look steep - you can measure the slope with a spirit level and a ruler... much better calibration than the altimeter.

Hitchy, you should post the climb details (after you've done it) on the www.cycle2max.com website. It's a great website that lists hill climbs and gives their distance, average gradient, etc. Registered users can then post their times of those climbs.

G'day Jazmo,
I'm already registered with them....but I'd be to embarrassed to post my time for THIS climb!.......I wouldn't need the s720, I could do it with a sun dial!,
