MSR Windpro gas stove

  1. Hello Everyone,

    I'm now in the market for a new stove and cookset to replace
    my ageing mess-tins and epigas alpine stove. My main
    requirement is to reduce the kit weight of my pack and to
    that end, I don't mind paying a bit more for less weight.

    I came across the MSR Windpro - a stove where the burner is
    connected to a gas cannister via a hose - rather than
    sitting on top of the gas cannister. This is my preffered
    type of stove as I can squeeze an extra day or two's worth
    of gas out of a cannister this way (and save on fuel
    weight). The minimum weight is quoted as being 193g - nearly
    half the weight of my rusting epigas alpine stove.

    Has anyone used this stove? If so, how does it perform? In
    particular, is the flame liable to flare up if I tip the gas
    cannister upside down to get the last bit of fuel out - or
    is the preheater effective enough at preventing this? Is it
    compatible with EN417 screw threads or do MSR's fuel
    cannisters have an incompatible screw thread?

    As for pots and pans, I'm looking at the titatiium variety.
    Many retailers sell MSR's Titan cookset at around £80 but
    field and trek sell Snowpeak titanium pots for £50 -
    subtantially cheaper than those from MSR. My question is
    really whether there's anything wrong or lacking with
    Snowpeak's pots that makes them cheaper. Does anyone have
    experience with these pots?

    My MSR Pocket Rocket has no problems with the 3 or 4 brands
    of gas canisters so I would be shocked if it were a problem
    with any of their gas stoves.

    No but take a look at the Primus anodized aluminium pots too
    - the Litech range. They are durable, non-stick and
    relatively light but not as light as the titanium offerings.

    When going light I use their 1 litre kettle that weighs 220g
    (including lid and built in handle).

    Might be tempted to get a Snowpeak one now you mention them!
    Will have to take a look next time I'm in the shops.

    I'm not convinced as of yet. I tend to settle for the MSR
    Blacklite range which is pretty lightweight, non stick and
    no slippy on top of your stove. Titanium pots are lighter
    but then they are nearly always smaller!

    Hi Anthony,

    I was was given some Nevisport gift tokens at Xmas and
    decided I would use it to lighten my cookwear. I went for
    the MSR Pocket Rocket at 85g. It comes in a red plastic
    'Toblerone' case which gives very good in-sack protection.
    Can't see why this top of canister design would give less
    gas lifetime than the Windpro? If you really want to go
    lightweight and can keep the cooking simple, why not go for
    the MSR Titan Kettle. I find it the perfect size for 1-man
    cookpot and a 220g gas can stores very neatly inside. Add a
    Titan mug for a brew whilst the kettle is on and it's the
    perfect lightweight solution IMHO!

    My Coleman 3001 gas stove only weighs 230g, cost me £12 in
    Millets as I recall.

    Seems a hell of a price to pay for pots and pans. Are you
    justifying the price with low weight or do you have
    something against aluminium?

    I notice that the Titan 2L pot and lid weighs 185g and
    costs £70.

    My pot and lid (not sure of the size, perhaps 1.5 L) weighs
    only 162g. In addition I have a medium (38g) and small (28g)
    saucepan. Whole lot weighs just 228g. Cost me about a fiver
    in Millets.

    Heaviest item is the pan handle which I saved from my
    ancient Trangia set, that weighs 49g.

  6. Don't use gas stoves, more empty canisters,,,, I prefer a
    Trangia cook kit, foolproof, bomb proof, packs small, is
    light, cheap to run and never needs servicing. I also use an
    87 year old primus stove.

    then you can turn the cannister upside down and shake the
    remaining bit of fuel out of the cannister. It's a good

    empty. That's my theory anyway, I'm not sure if this is
    the case in practise though (never having had a top
    mounted burner).

    On my most recent Narvik trip, I was able to get about six
    and a half days worth of cooking with a 250 gram primus gas
    cannister. I'm not sure how well the pocket rocket would
    perform in conparison but if it meant having to take an
    extra cannister, then the weight saved by bringing a pocket
    rocket would be offset by having to carry an extra
    cannister.

    I thought it was the pressure difference between the
    canister and the outside world that made it come out so it
    shouldn't make any difference what way around it is... Might
    be wrong though.

    That can be a very dangerous procedure.

    The amount of gas at the burner is due to the vapour
    pressure within the canister and that in turn is dependent
    on the temperature of the liquid gas, not the amount of
    liquid gas remaining. Why a nearly empty can is less
    effective than a fuller can is that change from liquid phase
    to gas within the can takes heat and the smaller the amount
    remaining the greater the temperature reduction in the can
    for the same amount of heat at the burner. Warmth from the
    hand can help if you can stand it and is probably the real
    reason why shaking appears to work after a fashion but
    holding the can firmly in the hand will do much better than
    gripping it just with the fingers to shake it.

    Turning the can upside down results in the liquid phase
    being expelled from the can.

    It does depend on where you're getting your supply. On the
    continent it costs next to nothing and is very widely
    available, unlike here. If you work (or know someone who
    works) in a laboratory then industrial quantities of pure
    spirit are often available for effectively nowt, but that's
    quite a big "if"!

    I find putting the canister on or near the flame quite an
    effective way of waking it up if emptyish or cold. It's
    probably not recommended as safe practice though!

    Official documentation for the Primus Himalaya MultiFuel
    (MFS) stove gives advice on using gas cartridges with that
    stove in cold weather. Various non-hazardous ways of warming
    the cartridge are advised. In addition the documentation
    offers the following option---"Turn down the control valve
    as low as possible. Now hold the gas cartridge and turn it
    upside down slowly and very carefully. While doing so, you
    must never lift the cartridge higher than the stove itself
    to avoid a sudden burst of flame."

    This stove, like some others that operate on gas, has a
    vapourising tube (otherwise known as generator) next to the
    flame. Fuel must pass through this heated tube before it is
    released in the burner. I think the theory is that (with
    exercise of due care) liquid butane may dribble down to the
    vapouriser, where it makes direct contact with a hot surface
    and is immediately vapourised. In effect the stove then
    operates as a liquid fuel stove. It should be noted that
    this stove is designed to work both with liquid fuel and
    gas. The procedure outlined above could be disastrous if it
    were attempted on a stove without a vapourising tube or
    equivalent.

    We use all our meths but if anyone fancies trying out some
    carbon disulphide or di ethyl ether in their stove we've got
    a few litres of that looking for a home along with various
    chlorinated solvents.

    Probably not although I have been known in the depths
    of Winter to put my Calor gas container on one burner
    while continuing to cook on the other. However that is
    a much bigger heat sink, the container alone weighs in
    at over 12 lb.

    My epigas stove has this vapourising tube. As a matter of
    routine for 10 years I always tipped the cannister upside
    down when running low forcing liquid through the hose.

    Only once in 10 years of regular use did this cause the
    flame to flare up. This was under cold conditions - about
    minus 10 celcuis, and I only just lit the stove a few
    seconds before so the vaporising tube was not yet hot enough
    to vapourise the fuel - hence liquid came out of the nozzle
    and flared up. It was rather alarming considering this was
    in my tent porch (door open thankfully) and certainly
    something to add to my experience book. Another feature of
    doing this is that the flame is still burning even when you
    close the valve, the liquid in the hose has to burn up
    before the flame goes out.

    I never knew that this practice was generally considered
    "very dangerous" and indeed I thought that this was common
    practice with such gas stoves.

    Using gas for the first time in years I just left the fuel
    bottle on its side rather than stood up. Some "interesting"
    flarees resulted and it was a bit like cooking with a
    temperamental liquid fuel stove. Lesson learned!
