I felt reasonably fresh after the DD...but I don't think my wife would

Not quite, I currently regard long distance rides (>300km) at Audax paces
as extreme cycling :-)

I'll do the distance but at my own pace. Having said that, I did find
myself looking up the LEL route and seeing if I could, in my wildest dreams,
take it on.

I'm still to make up my mind though the purchase of a Roberts Audax bike
just might spur me on, just have to get the bursar to loosen the purse
strings ;-)

I'll settle for the W2W and E2E this year and take it from there....

You could ride it as a permanent, or ride just the top section - Thorne
to Thorne - similarly.

You can also do the E2E as a permanent, but it is difficult even for
experienced Audax riders to beat the time limit on that one.

Thorne to Dalkieth/Edinburgh would make a nice 3 day tour. I was
thinking about this during the ride. If done as a tour a York start
would be better, 1st night stop at Langdon Beck YH then stop again
somewhere like Canonbie in a B&B. Rding those hills in the dark was fun
in a randoneering kind of way. We couldn't see the road beyond our
lamps' beam, had no idea how long each climb was ! The descents were
fast and very cold. We had quite a shock the following day when we did
the reverse of the route in daylight !!!

After some considerable weight loss Imjust might consider it.....only 5-6
stone to go :-)

I looked at that possibility on the Audax UK site and discarded the notion
as being
unrealistic at this stage in my development as a born again cylclist.

Langdon Beck Youth Hostel was fantastic. I was thinking myself that I'd
like to do it again in a stylee that would allow one to enjoy it
properly. A hotel or B&B in Inverleithen could also make a possible
overnight stop.

Like stages in LEL it's best to consider the stones one at a time. Not
all the LEL finishers, however, were lean and svelte.

Obviously it needs to be worked up to. You've already surprised
yourself and impressed urc by what you've achieved this year. There's
no reason on earth to go beyond that unless you particularly want to.
If you do want to step up a level, however, you might consider whether
an SR series was on the cards for next year. Once you've got a
successful 600 under your belt the ultra distances become feasible.

Yes Langdon Beck was great. We arrived there on the first day in the
early evening, most of our group pressed on to control at Alston but my
mate and I decided to stop for a cuppa here since it was very quiet. The
people there had had a very quiet day and were pleased to see us. So we
took afternoon tea, chatted about the cricket and Le Tour and pushed on
over Yad Moss. On day two we arrived just as it was getting dark at
about 10pm and got a bed which was very welcome after the 200km through
the hills and the previous days 400km !!! I left my camera at Langdon
Beck, but by the time I arrived at Eppleby there was a message on my
phone from Heather Swift saying it had been found (I daren't ask where)
and was being ported to me by my mate Damon Peacock who arrived just as
we were leaving Eppleby. Heather was great supplying items of cycling
clothing and cardboard chect shields to those who needed them.

Not sure who if any of the YH staff were there but the hostel is in a
great location and would be a good stopping point. I have stayed at
Alston YH too but didn't visit during LEL. and since its actually in a
town has more facilities which some folk seem to like.

I'd like to join in tho I'm not sure when I can fit it in. This year's hols
are all accounted for.
