Typically, the '4" spacing' is required at any point >18" above grade.

If clearing snow is an issue the railing should be designed to account for
this (i.e. bottom rail 4" above top of decking)

Spindles (and posts) are one of the best ways to add "characture" to a deck.
There are a ton of options and "looks" that can be acheived with different
railings. Don't think of them as purely fuctional, make them a design
element!

I didn't even need the posts IMO. I have 12 foot 2X10s canted out 3
1/2 feet. They only allow one foot of cantilevering.

Dude, that looks great! I can't imagine why you were apologizing for the
railing.

On the stairs, you could've carried the bottom rail theme all the way down
like you did on the main deck, allowing you to sweep the snow off the sides
of the steps. But that's a non issue really. It looks great.

Thanks! I thought about doing that but at that point, I just wanted
to get it done. Plus, I didn't figure I was going to have to block
the rise on the stairs. I don't think the snow will be too much of a
problem as I still have 3 1/2" openings on the stairs.
