  1. I have a friend who trains and during running he needs a reliable source of
music for up to 3- 4hours. I suggested an mp3 player......does anyone have
experience or advice as to what players work the best and are the most
    dependable under this type use
    thanks

  2. Just about any mp3 players are reliable these days. Just make sure he gets
a sport one (gets old if you have to hold it in your hand after awhile).
The more expensive you get, the smaller they get and the more music they can
hold. I love using mine during runs, especially days I don't "feel" like
    running.

Make sure he gets a "memory card" style and not a hard-drive based,
such as an Ipod. Those can't take the constant jarring.

I recently purchased an iRiver, which has been good, holds about 4
hours worth of music (256mb) and seems to have good battery life.

Some of them have upgradeable memory cards. The price of flash memory has
been plummeting the past few months and is even cheaper than general
computer memory. You can get a thousand megabyte card (16 hours of music)
for about $70 at some places.

I beg to differ a little on this. I have an iPod, and I've had no
problems with it...provided I'm careful. I used to use the Marware
arm strap, and did have problems with skipping toward the end of my
longer runs (45 min. plus). But I've found if I hold the iPod in my
hand, I can reduce the jarring and I have no skipping problems...

Yes, I've found the same thing, BUT, this is still too much stress on
the hard drive. Plus, do you really want to carry it in your hand for
    an hour or more?

I use mine (almost) daily with the marware arm-band thingy. It locks up
maybe once every other week. I've been using it for 2 years. Sure, it
may lock up and die at some point but....[shrug].

  9. I'm on my 4th mp3 player over the last 5 years or so. I got an iRiver
flash-based player a few months ago and it is, by far, the best one I've
used. I agree with other comments about using flash-based vs. hard
drive storage. But another thing to consider within the flash-based
category is memory expandable vs. no. Units that are not expandable can
be smaller, as is evidenced by my iRiver. (IFP-790T or whatever the
heck style of numbering they use.) I have the 256MB version; holds
about 50 songs. In 3-4 hours use it will need to cycle back so you
might end up hearing the same song twice during a run.

The only drawback is that the UI is a little geeky/frustrating at first.
But if this unit fails, gets stolen or is irreparably broken I'll go
right out and buy another iRiver.

Yeah, good point. For what it's worth--BusinessWeek reported today
that Apple is expected to release a flash-memory-based iPod within the
next year or so. They're not talking about what the capacity would
be, but I have to imagine Apple would want to create something larger
than what you find in the market now--why jump in an already crowded
marketplace with another 256MB/512MB flash player? I just bought my
40G iPod a couple months ago--now this is more incentive to run with
it strapped to my arm and just kill the damned thing off! LOL!!!!!!
