It really depends on how far out of the city you want to live and whether you want mostly bikeways or don't mind riding on the road.

I commute to the CBD from Chapel Hill in the north-side western
suburbs (note "western suburbs" is not a swear word in brissy), and
have bikeway pretty much door-to-door over a 15km commute. The
'bicentennial bikeway' follows the river westward from the CBD to
Toowong. An on-street bikelane (about 1km) joins this to the bikeway
that parallels the western freeway as far as Mt Ommaney.

Once you get off the crowded river bikeway, the western route is practically
deserted, and you can achieve whatever speeds gravity and sanity allow.

The suburban streets in the string of 'burbs along the freeway
(toowong, taringa, indrooroopilly, chapel hill, kenmore) tend to have
some gnarly hills, so consult maps.google.com to get the lat-long, then
load up 'google earth' for a 3d view... Suburbs
beyond the river (Jindalee, Mt Ommaney, Sinnamon Pk) are somewhat flatter.

I can't say much about northern or southern bike routes, but be aware
that a stretch of the bikeway along the south-east freeway will be
closed for something like the next million years due to Crazy Tunnel
Construction Antics. South-side bikers will be able to add more.

I've lived southside, inner south-east, and inner north.
Northside is nastier for riding although inner isn't so bad
as there's generally so much traffic the cars are moving
slower than the cyclists.

As for construction closing the South East Fwy bikepath -
using it took me 20 minutes longer to get to the city than

Rd. There are nicer routes too, heading along service roads

And remembering Monsterman's famous post, it depends upon whether or not
you play the banjo, as to whether you should live north or South. I
have dispensation from MM though 🙂

Hehe - "Western suburbs" is only not a swear word if you live in the
western suburbs... *giggles*

You could live on the northside, but then you'd be a total w#nker,
spending your day trying to work out how on earth to get to the CBD
through the winding over-trafficked narrow streets, and wishing there
was some sort of basic road/public transport infrastructure.

Or you could live on the southside, be cool, and live a simple, easy
life of cycle-commuting most days, and catching easy PT when you are
tired...

I must admit that getting into the city from the north is not an easy (or safe)journey although there are bike paths if you want a rather circuitous route. Not having tried from the south I cannot comment. I'd have to say though that with the increasing length of bikeway along the Western Freeway wouldn't that be the easiest point to point 'safe' road free commute route?

There are however consolations for living on the beautiful north of the river. magnificent rides out around Redcliffe and Sandgate, Mt Mee, Samford, Dayboro, up the north coast. Access to Lakeside for criteriums! Heaven!

Since I was unable to post in the defence of the northside at the time of the last discussion about this I feel obliged to do so now!

The Wynnum/Manly loop is quite lovely too, Mt Cotton is
great and of course it's a perfect imperial century to do a
loop of Mt Tambo/Canungra. Of course I live alongside the
Brisbane River right near the cafe strip on Oxford St, to
which I ride my shopping bike for groceries and so on. Oh
and did I mention it's only a 12 minute leisurely bike ride
away from the Murarrie Criterium circuit...

Although I quite like the northside, I find driving and riding over that way to be a total [censored]. Southside is much better that way.

Some Brissie suburbs are really hard to spell: Indooroopilly,
Yeerongpilly. Other than that, anything within 10km should be fine, or
on one of the bikeways: Western Freeway or Southeast Freeway. Have a
look on the OurBrisbane website for cycling maps. Also on bikely.com.

Yeah I was one of the thread starters for the Brissy thing a couple of
months ago, but alas, it has been defered to possibly a later era due to not
getting the job I applied for. I think I was too over qualified for them and
they couldn't find out how they could get free government money to cover my
training seeing that I already had the qualifications...oh well...I should
send them a bill of $1,000 for the travel and inconvenience they put me
through.......but we all know what will be the response.

I got another job here local(Campbelltown-Macarthur area/Sydney Southwest)
to where I'm living and have just sold my house so I might rent down here
for 6 months then re-evaluate the big move then when the dust has settled
from the sale.

So it hasn't been cancelled completely at this stage,and brissy still looks
rather attractive.

Damn, and I was soooo looking forward to checking out all those you-beaut
bike paths up there too.

And this is rather relevant when changing addresses and subscribing to
services. Do you know how many times I had to spell out
"Coonabarabran" on the phone? And I had to physically write it out
for one person who deleted the last two letters everytime I switched
from "ab" to "ar". Most of the time, I had to write it out myself on
my end of the phone before reading it out for them.
