There is a sense among many cyclists that accident investigations
involving cyclists tend to get glossed-over. Rider sees mouse,
hits the binders, goes over the handlebar, smashes his head open.
End of story?If he had been travelling fast enough to go over the handlebar,
I bet he wouldn't even have seen the mouse.
In all my years of cycling, I've seen in the road (alive) horses, cows,
deer, various birds (usually eating dead animals), a few snakes,
countless rabbits (and once an owl catching a rabbit), numerous
squirrels (often in the state of kamikaze), a number of turtles, a frog
or two, a swarm of tarantulas (thankful I was in a car that time),
countless dogs, and even an ostrich. The dead animals I've seen include
most of the above (not the ostrich) plus raccoons, armadillos, and
opposums. I'm sure there is more that I've seen but have forgotten.
Never have I seen a mouse.
Does this mean they aren't out there? No. I suppose that they are too
small, too smart, or perhaps I am always moving too fast to notice
them.
What has this mouse to do with the death of this cyclist? I look
forward to, as Paul Harvey says, the rest of the story....
