You could use the baggy shorts for general road riding if you don't want your package on display. There is a type of mtb short that is essentiallly a double short which has a spandex built in liner. While not as thick as a regular road short, it does keep everything together while still having the baggy outer covering. The reality is a good road short, especially a bib, will be far more comfy than any mtb short. Bite the bullet, buy some spandex, ditch the undies and ride off into the sunset.

Spandex road shorts are definitely more comfortable to wear, they stretch better with no binding around the thighs that I feel with the mountain biking ones. One other thing I've found is the mountain bike shorts make my legs warmer. It's not so bad right now in the spring, but might not be so good in mid summer.

I actually think road shorts are better for mb too. I've gotten mb shorts caught on the handle bars. I usualy use mb shorts when I go riding with my son

The MTB shorts will do for those times when you're feeling a bit modest (riding with the kids, etc...) but road tights are decidedly more comfortable.

I didn’t think everyone else in the restaurant would want to be eating and seeing me in spandex. Otherwise… it’s my spandex bib shorts….[/font] -

I had a pair of baggy style shorts with a padded undershort. I found legs on the insert would roll up and form an uncomfortable bunch near the top of my leg. Road shorts are definitely more comfortable in my opinion.

Yeah I agree -- I tried the padded MTB shorts once, [censored]. The pad moves around and chafes. If you're overly buldge-conscious, get some decent bibs (once you try bibs you'll never go back to shorts) and wear a loose-fitting pair of shorts over them. 😎 Or better yet, learn to love the lycra.

i won't ride mtb with spandex clad dudes.. spandex betty is a different story though..!
