The tire doesn't need to be 1.95". I've ridden my MTB in "urban mode"
with many different tires, ranging from 1.25" to 2.0". There are many
nice tires out there - I like the Gatorskins (and most Conti tires in
general), with the only drawback being their fragile sidewalls (they
tend to deteriorate from age, which isn't a problem if you ride them
enough so they wear out first). I currently ride the Panaracer T-Serv
tires, which are very similar, but less expensive, and with very tough
sidewalls (and they also last forever).

Hi Mate,

I have been running the Continental Ultra Gator Duraskin 700x23 on my commutor (planet x kaffenback), for the last 6 months(about 18 miles a day to and from work) and I have been really pleased with them. They are wearing well, and have only had one flat with them (i was on about about 1 flat a week with my previous michellin tyres). The tyres had great reviews in the uk road bike press last year, and the general sentiment was it was a great budget mile munching tyre, ideal for high milage training/ commuting/ winter tyre. Obviously, mine are the roadie version of what you are looking after, but I've got no complaints.

If you're going to have a slick up front, you might as well have a slick
on the back. You'll get no off-road braking performance from a slick, and
most of your braking power comes from the front. If you put either of
those slick tires on your bike, DO NOT take it off-road. I decided to
divert off to a dry, smooth trail one time with slicks, and had a rather
spectacular high-speed crash.

On my 'road' bike, I use Michelin Wildgripper Rock tires. These hold the
road well and provde decent braking on gravel fireroads. I have used a
semi tire like your DH 15, but wasn't impressed; the side knobs rarely add
value on a rear wheel, and the main tread is minimal.

The Wildgripper Rock seems to be discontinued, but you should be able to
find the new "Country Rock" tires. If you like Continental tires, the Town
& Country is a similar model.

Hi Bruce,

Am riding a pair of Conti Sportcontacts myself (26x1.3"😉 right now, no
flats after 700 mi even with a 400 mi loaded trip.

If speed is important, check out Hutchinson Top Slick 26x1" - they are
my favourites. But the soft rubber compound wears out quickly.

Ask your LBS if your rims are suited for narrow tires.

Thanks Everyone for your advice on this.
I've ended up opting for the Maxxis Hookworm tyres 26x2.5! bit mad,
but much fun!
Tough to get on the rims, but with the help of a chunky screwdriver and
some careful wiggling I managed to get them on last night. I cycled
them to work today and am loving them. I need to get another 2.5 tube
as I only seem to have one that can properly inflate to that size.
