Mountain Bike Magazines

It seems to be that most of the magazines have the same "test all the 2 and 3 thousand dollar bike"
mentallity and that we all are in it for racing. You really have to look closely to find good, every
day rider articles in them.

The only mag that I can stomach anymore is "Dirt Rag".

Find the biggest magazine store around. Out this way its called News Rack. Now be your own judge
look at all the mountain bike magazine till you find one or more for you.

Take anything any of the mags say with a grain of salt. Remember, the parts makers run ads, so
there's sort of a "this is great schwag" element to all the reviews.

It really all depends on what the magazines are for. For a look at "what's out there," they can be
an OK resource. For hints on "what to buy," maybe really focused questions in this ng would help.
Asking "what bike should I buy" with no other info will NOT get you many helpful replies. 🙂

Before I had my first FS bike, I read Mountain Bike Action, and it's OK for "what's out there," and
some of the tech advice they hand out is OK too. Dirt Rag is a decent mag as well - I think it's a
pretty honest MTB "journal" without all the slickness of the big publishing house ones.

Good luck, and don't let the a.m-b curmudgeons scare you. They are really loveable, deep down
inside. Except Sorni - he's dirty-rotten to the core. Don't listen to a word he says, or you'll be

There are two top british mags. MountainBiking UK has a lot of attitude, humour and really
interesting articles on tech, riding and fooling around. Especially fooling around. And then you
have MountainBikeRider. This might be more up your alley if by "recreational" you mean "having a
good day out in the woods, looking at the views and patting the squirrels". They have a lot of
inspiring ride reports and also all the good articles on tech and riding. Both can be ordered on the

I've subscribed to both these mags and also to MountainBikeAction. The latter feels like a thin
pamphlette of american political correctness compared to the british ones.

Seems mountain bike mags try to cover too may types of bikes (DH,FR,XC,race,etc) and therefore are
rarely knowledgeable about anything specific ones. Unfortunately that's all we have to read however,
and until some mags come out specializing in certain types we're stuck gettin half assed reviews.
