Mountain Bike Bottom Bracket selection

I am in the market for a new bottom bracket for my mountain bike.
The BB has the square crank mountings.
I have not pulled the BB out yet, so I do not have the measurements at
this time.

What should I look for in the new BB?
I hate to believe that the more $$ the better.

A Shimano UN 52,54,72,or 74 would be the way to go. But you better
remove the old one 1st to see the to check out the measurement. What
frame is it and what year?

I will have the tools today to remove the BB to obtain the actual
measurements.
The frame is an older Raleigh Canada MicroLite (~1998). I have removed
the crack on a number of occations in the past, and noted that the cap
on the BB stated it was a sealed unit.

Never heard of that particular Raliegh. Couldn't google much either.

If it has Shimano or Sugino cranks, you'll need something with a JIS
taper. That basically means I'm seconding Crazy Fred.

Why thank you for seeing the same way I do. It could be 68 mm or 73 mm
and any where from a 110 to 118 wide. No telling till it in your hand
and you see the mments or you do the measuring yourself with a
caliber.
