  1. Hey all,

Well, I started commuting to work on the bike in May last
    year. Five miles each way.

Then I moved to Battersea, which made the journey to Swiss
Cottage a shade over seven miles each way.

Now I've moved to Plaistow, near Stratford - pro'er eastenda
land - which brings my current journey to a smidge under
    eleven miles each way.

So, my question: Quite how the hell do you do it? This
has been the first (planned) cycling morning that I've
thought "bugger it" on, and I'm desperately trying to
    make it my last...

    Cheers, Tom.

That's a long commute to do day in, day out. Don't beat
yourself up if you fancy a few days off.

Treat yourself to a really nice bike. Chas Roberts isn't
    that far from you...

I do 24 miles a day, even at 0545 in winter. I simply look
at my 30in waist and my beer intake and it keeps me going!
Also, I always carry my radio in my rear pocket and have
Radio 5 on as I ride. I would never go back to commuting by
car anymore (except for night shift), I love being out in
the open air, never having to worry about traffic jams and
being fit and healthy is the best feeling in the world :-)

Heh! Well, not moving further away than you're happy to ride
would be a good start :-)

You could always try my current masterplan: use a bike
which is train-portable, so if you run out of enthusiasm
after a few miles you can hop on the train / tube / bus. In
my case I can take my non-folding recumbent on the train,
    which is nice.

Come to think of it, that's another way: buy a recumbent.
You'll be having so much fun you'll start looking for places
even further away from the office :-D

When you think "bugger it", just get on the bike and do it.
You'll be wondering why you thought "bugger it" within a few
minutes. Take time to find the 'nice route' too ... I cut
through Richmond Park and down backroads, and hardly touch a
main road. Well, that is when you haven't buggered up your
rims and are waiting for Wiggle to dispatch them, so you can
    rebuild your wheels 🙁

I just think of the possible alternatives. Drive, bus, walk,
train ... suddenly cycling regains its appeal.

Very occasionally (typically a couple of times a year) I
drive to work. I spend the whole journey, each way, wishing
I was on a bike. And then I'm unlikely to have any more
"bugger it" moments for the rest of the year.

    Cheers, Tom.

I don't know the area in which you cycle, perhaps you don't
get rabbits, deer, birds and stuff for company. Sounds
corny, but I find it helps a little. My commute is also a
shade under 11 miles which I found to be a bit on the long
side when I began. As I got fitter, so the ride became less
arduous and I started looking forward to making the journey
in under 45 minutes then under 44 and so on. My first sub 40
    minute commute was absolutely fantastic.

The thing that keeps me going most of all now is
habit. Cycling _is_ the way I get to work, I no longer
    think about it.

If you haven't got a nice light bike, get one. Put a cycling
computer on it and watch yourself get fitter. Make a point
of waving to other people on bikes, it makes you feel that
you belong to a special group.
