How do you guys motivate yourselves to get out and ride? I know alot of you dont need motivation, and I dont usually either, until lately so was just wondering.

I aint been doing this for years, but what got me motivated to start was to lose weight and get some general fitness about me as I'm going for 40 next month...
I had been on an MTB for a couple of years a few years ago and when zipped past by roadies thought "wtf would you be on a bike for that long for?"
I know now...

For the pure thrill of riding fast. It's an addictive lifestyle also, but I'm single and at liberty to do as I please. Those with families and all the additional stress often have to get their riding time in when they can.
As far as motivation you could try setting goals, taking a different road leading to a town that you've never been in. Find a hilly a course or a mountain to climb. See if you can find a regular club ride, it's a lot more fun when you're in with a bunch and you can practice bike skills.
For me my life pretty much revolves around getting to go out and push myself everynight, but I love the feeling of pushing myself and droping down dead tired in my bed at night. I always finish my ride at night by trying to out sprint the traffic on my mainstreet leading back to my house when I've finished my daily ride.
Count yourself lucky if your a cyclist, there are so many people that live such mundane lives, sitting and rotting in front of a television that never get to feel what it's like to push your body to the limit every night.

Right now its very simple!! The club I started riding with 14 days ago is great, but I can definately feel the competitiveness in the group. I used to be a good racer and I am getting dropped in about 8 to 12 miles because I have 120 miles in this year and no fitness from any other disciplines and they are racing all the time!! Mmy motivation is simply to get fit and finish the club rides and then put the hurting on these guys!!
My other goal is to be competitive at the 2007 State Time Trial race and maybe some road races as well. This and wanting to be in shape again is whats motivating me.

winter is a bad time for me... its hard to get me motivated when its so cold (yeah yeah, im a queenslander, but im only little and not well insulated... and its been rather cold this year!) about the only thing that gets me motivated during the colder months is the thought of my endurance levels and general fitness for the warmer and more active months! i try to ride as much as i can in winter, but its never as much as i would like to.
for the other 8 months of the year, the only thing that i need motivation for is exams... which are the only things keeping me off my bike!
if you feel like you are getting bored with cycling, try something new... take a different route to your daily destination... get up earlier and go exploring, riding with a friend is always good... if you can find more than one friend thats even better! if you have done all that, then psych yourself up for a big scenic ride on a sunday, just because you can. if you have more than one bike, try using the one you dont use often for a change...
and if you have done all that, take your bike up to the biggest hill you can find, and then find the fastest way to the bottom... that will soon get you motivated 😄 -
Health and well-being. Vigorous exercise is the nearest thing to the Fountain of Youth you can find. I also firmly believe it helps protect against serious illness. In my own case I was diagnosed with a form of leukemia that they expected to kill me within five years. It's now ten years later and I'm one of the top senior time trialists in the state. I came down with the disease during a period of life when I was only keeping a low level of fitness. Now staying in high gear has helped me keep the disease at bay.

if it wasn't for my friends calling me at 5:15am, id sleep in every time. if we dont hear from the other person by 5:15 we assume they slept in and call to wake them up and let them know well be there in 10 min.

I feel so much better now that I have been cycling again. My best friend and I decided to start riding to improve our health. Both of us needed to loose some weight. More so me. For me trying to be more fit is the main motivator along with the freedom from everything that is my life for that brief moment in time while I'm riding.
