A couple of years ago I was setting out to ride to work. It was
early morning, still dark. There's an old, wood framed, detached
garage here at the house where I live. I rolled my bike past
the garage to the back lane, set my foot to the pedal, mounted,
and proceeded on my way. Just as I got started, a juvenile skunk
bolted out from under the garage door and started racing with me,
running along at my right side. There was a definite look of
determination on his face. I'm not sure what he was determined
to do, but I veered left at the earliest opportunity.
Folks complain about being chased by dogs, but being chased
by skunks is an horse of a different feather.
Another rider once told me how, as he was shortcutting down
a back alley, he noticed a plump garbage bag mysteriously
suspended in mid-air up ahead. On closer approach he realized
a cabal of crows had conspired to lift it up, to drop it and
bust it open in order to access its crow-licious contents.
I've had some near misses from crows dropping mussels on the
ground, but I have so far sustained no direct hits.
