  1. Well I was jonsesing for some papadums so I went to the grocery store got
several packages, some picante sauce and some onion powder. I was almost
out of onion powder and the papadums and picante sauce are snacks for
    rental movies tonight.

Driving home I was thinking about breakfast. I decided to stop at a
favorite chain from my youth a Salsbury House. The open all night food
joint from my long ago past. Many a night after a carouse on the town I've
eaten breakfast there at 3 or 4 am.

It is true you can never go home....The eggs were over easy ...I've had
softer over hard eggs plus they were extremely rubbery, toast was greasy,
terribly limp and chewy and the thinly sliced back bacon was from some sort
of pressed meat roll. Plus the coffee was mild luke warm dishwater.. .

Anybody else have their fond food memories come back and bite them?

Nope. Memories yes, fond ones no. The all-night burger/breakfast joints
always seemed to serve the worst food "in my youth". Well, I thought so,
anyway.. However, the guys in the group we hung out with (who had had
more than their fair share of beer etc. by 3 or 4am) thought the food
    was just "great". Go figure.

    Oh yeah...

A local chain to me, Harry's Hoffbrau, was The Place my parents
would take Little Brother and me during our quick-growth
adolescences. The food was hot, there was a lot, and the variety
appealed to both; costs were pretty good, too. Both my Sainted
Mother(tm) and Father-unit could get a pitcher of their favorite
draught and the four of us usually saw several other neighborhood
    families so we'd group it.

I recently took all three daughter-units there to share my
Remembrances. The floor plan's still the same, 30+ years later.
All three loved it. One got the hot turkey dinner, another the
"roast beef" dinner, and Spawn got a tamale meal; filled them up
very nicely. I thought the variety was still pretty decent, too.
The price was a shocker (US$65) and almost forced my dentures
across the countertop at the register. I got the tamale, salad,
rice pudding, and coffee. I can honestly say it not only stomped
my Memory like a Panzer across daisies, it ground it into powder.

    Never again.

Yabut, at least the food was good - albeit expensive. Most "good"
restaurants here last about 5 years before changing ownership/management
(or being turned into a laundromat). I hate that.

Ain't it the truth. Remember Sam's? Sacto used to be the center of
the hofbrau universe. Besides a half dozen Sam's, there were another
half dozen hofbraus feeding busloads of returnees from Reno. Almost
all had the classic bay window rotisserie thingie jutting out from the
side of the building with a couple big ol' roasts or turkeys dripping
enough mouth-watering goodness to draw in even the most jaded palate.
Most are now gone and the remaing ones serve [censored].

Same happened to Poor Red's BBQ in El Dorado. Forty years ago they
served up the best pork ribs on the West Coast. It was nothing to see
a pair of swells straight from the opera sitting next to some ol' dirt
caked prospector, all yukking it up like long lost pals while downing
grasshoppers by the blender full. Sadly, Red and Opal are long gone
and the last time I was up there, the bums tried to pass off leftover
night-before ribs on me. The secret sauce isn't the same and after dining there
off and on for forty years, I'll never go back.

This is the sad case with way too many restaurants that are still
around. Frank Fat's used to serve up a killer little beef strip
steak. It's no longer even listed. Minnie's in Modesto used to serve
the best Chinese in town. I tried it a couple years ago and it sucked
on a level that could negate gravity.

On the other hand, the Mammoth Orange on 99 near Fairmead CA (50+yrs
old) still make their huge rootbeer float that's to die for.

We drove past there on the way home from the movies and my niece said the
same thing. A bunch of friends from band apparently went there recently and
it was inedible. Sad. Though I can say I never have eaten there so I have no
    opinion either way.

Not the memories, but sometimes me trying to relive them. Though I guess I
am lucky that many of memories are related to my Mama's cooking and I can
still get that at least once a week.

The reliveables I miss most of the garden vegetables and apples from my
Grandfather's garden and orchard. Warm strawberries right out of the sun,
apples picked that day, applesauce all winter from the freezer......I can
    only remember.

Sounds fine to me. Don't forget you were getting $1.25 an hour in
those days. I can remember 10 cent cokes in high school that are
about $2.00 now. Of course I earn $30 an hour now compared with .95
    cents an hour then.

Not around here. The restaurants seem to recyle (rinse?) and return as
a new restaurant in no time. Laundromats just don't compete.
