  1. On the US governments new Food Pyramid site they offer to evaluate your food
intake using their recommendations. So I entered what I normally consume
over a 24 hour period (a tedious process) and got their evaluation.
Needless to say they think I'm eating all wrong, too little carbohydrate,
way too much fat and protein, no grains or fruits Gasp!. I was particularly
struck by the variance in protein, my intake being 152 gms against their
recommended 56! I'm in pretty good shape looking at my weight, body fat,
blood chemistry, BP, strength and aerobic fitness so how much more wonderful
would I be if I completely changed my diet to correspond with the fine
scientific thinkers employed by the government? Hah!

You have to keep in mind that this food pyramid was developed by a
committee and politicians. They owe their exhalted positions to those
who select/elect them and those folks have a lot to lose if we don't eat
what lobbyists want us to eat.

Think of how big the sugar industry and the grain industry is in the
U.S. I assume they are also well supported with gov't funding.

Yeah, I know which is why I've never taken the thing seriously. Just
thought it'd be interesting to see how far away they are from what I think
is a healthy diet, and while reasonable people can disagree about the need
to consume grains and fruit, I was rather startled by the small amount of
protein they recommend. I suspect that this may be partly because once
they'd satisfied the needs of the sugar/grain/potato/fruit gang there simply
wasn't enough room left for high protein food.

Too much protein will kill your kidneys!

Too much of almost anything is bad, but my lean body mass is around 160 lbs
and I go to the gym for an hour or so almost every day so their recommended
50 gms of protein looks awfully low by my standards. At about 150 gms I'm
pretty much in line with the recommended amount in Protein Power.

Yeah, but according to them, you don't need all that protein....get carbs,
    fruit, grains, and veggies.

    Oh rubbish!

That will not happen to normally functioning, healthy kidneys. If you have
some sort of problem with them, they of course YMMV; and some additional
care and attention may need to taken.

and beans! beans beans beans! the website kept on stressing the
goodness of replacing some of the meat protein intake with protein from
beans and pulses. now according to the new pyramid beans are meat and
meat are beans. peanuts are cows, kidney beans are pigs and soya beans
    are chickens.

Actually its worst than that. The government paid a lot of money
to a marketing firm (that works for a lot of food industries) to
make up the design and rhetoric.

I'd be cautious about consuming more than 120 (or so) grams of proteins
per day. It is more than the body needs and could conceivably cause
some problems, especially if there is an un-diagnosed problem with the
    kidneys.

Aren't you supposed to get things like that checked before starting any
change in diet? According to Joslin's latest recommendations I can have up
to 135g of protein, daily. I can't seem to get anywhere near that much.

The Eades in Protein Power say protein is not a problem if your kidneys were
healthy to start with. If a problem was developing how do you think it
    would manifest itself?

Don't Eskimo's eat mostly if not all protein? I imagine it's hard to
grow rice & wheat in the snow. I haven't heard of kidney problems with
them. The only thing they seem to lack is heart disease. Hmmmm

  18. And fat, ever hear of blubber?
