schedule got cut in half, to one every 15 minutes or so, in Long Beach
NY. We'll see what happens this weekend. Those old Pipers run on hi-
test, too.

Deliveries at stores are being cut back here in Manhattan and prices of
food are going up notably.

I know my insurance company has to love these gas prices. Today, I'm
going from 4 insured car to 2. I don't need the 4-runner or the RV at
these prices.

If everyone only drove when needed for 2 weeks, prices would drop in no
time.

Additionally, I'm no longer going to the gas stations for milk, pop,
etc. I'll ride my bike, with trailer for these items.

Today it's $2.69/gallon in Atlanta (at Kroger). That's up 10 cents a gallon
since yesterday (IIRC).

Supposed to go up considerably and even be unavailable altogether, according to
the news. All due to hurricane Katrina. Because pipeline pumps have no
electricity and offshore wells and onshore refineries are down, there may be
widespread shortages--at least here in the South. Vendors are supposedly raising
prices more than otherwise dictated by the market in order to drive down demand.

Different people have different ideas of need. For one person, going
around the block for a pack of cigarettes is "needed" driving, for
another person, walking if it's under 2km, biking if it's 2-15km and
driving beyond is needed driving. For some people no driving is truly
needed.

Much better, pick a price, park the car when the price goes over that
amount, after a while the gas companies clue in, at say $2.97/Gallon
people drive, at $3.01/Gallon they don't, and guess what, gas prices
will stabilize at $2.97/Gallon.....

You don't even need a trailer for milk or pop, a Pannier rack with a set
of bags would be good enough for a DVD, bottle of pop and a bag of
Dorettos, need to balance the load though.....

Driving down to Denver last night at about 7:30 PM, I passed a station
offering gas at $2.59/ gallon. Coming back at about 10:30 PM, the same
station was asking $2.89. A bit scary to see it climb that fast.

Yesterday morning, Regular gas was $2.699, here in Milwaukee. But, the
gas stations all around town cranked it up to $2.999 sometime during the
day. A $0.30 hike in one day! Yikes! I found one unfortunate gas station
that had raised their prices in the morning to $2.73. State law says
they can only raise their prices once per day, so I quickly filled up
the Civic. Then, I went home, waited for the wife to get home, and
brought the minivan there. Well, when I got back there were signs all
over (Out of Unleaded). The sarcastic side of me said, "Yeah, right -
out! I bet they just shut down the pumps, knowing that they are gonna
hike up the prices tomorrow!" But, even still, the Premium was $2.89 -
$0.10 less than anyone else in town had for Regular.

At one gas station, a fight broke out. People were filling up at the
lower price ($2.699), when the owner shut down the pumps and raised the
prices on them! Well, the customers put up a big fight, and even flagged
down a Sherriff who happened to be passing by. In the end, the owner was
forced to let those customers fill up at the lower price, before he
started gouging the people after them.

I hear that most of the gas stations are hiking the prices up another
$0.30, today, to $3.299!

Those price gouging [censored]!!!

Driving down to Denver last night at about 7:30 PM, I passed a station
offering gas at $2.59/ gallon. Coming back at about 10:30 PM, the same
station was asking $2.89. A bit scary to see it climb that fast.

Currently some stations have dropped to around $1.05 around here,
typical gas company MO though, they want to set the price at $1.05, so
they bump it to $1.20 then drop it to $1.05 and people think they are
getting a deal. So the sheep dutifuly fill the tanks in their SUVs and
Luxoboats thinking they are getting a good deal. They dutifully will not
go further then 6m without getting in the car, waiting until it warms up
and the A/C is on full blast. Then in a couple of months, the oil
companies will find some reason to bump the price again, probably
something like, we now know the full affects of Katrina, and that's why
we are bumping the price to $1.40......

Personally I vowed not to pay more then $1/L so when the tank is empty,
it's stayin' that way.

Which, on the one hand, seems like a terrible thing to do (artificially
raising prices to deliberately cut demand) but on the other, it's risky
because demand doesn't always recover... you'll lose some people when gas
becomes "reasonable" again (if it ever does) to public transit, more car
pooling, heaven forbid even some cycling.

That's not the whole story. You are (or likely will be) buying a
cheaper grade of gasoline than the numbers on the pump imply, so your
mileage will drop. Higher price, and you need to buy more (assuming no
adjustment in driving). The mileage on my wife's vehicle recently
dropped by a whopping 7%, while mine dropped about 4%.

I am paying less (yes, less) for gasoline than I have in many, many
years. I recently started a new job which is one mile from my wife's
job, and so one small vehicle is doing the driving instead of one small
and one too big vehicle. This morning, my daughter started riding with
us, but I never used to pay for her gas. She's never payed less,
either.

As long as we buy it, they will charge it.

C$0.999 to C$1.029/litre range. Today the are sititng at C$1.055/litre

1 gallon [US, liquid] = 3.7854118 litre 1US$ = ~$1.19 C$

So C$0.999/litre = US$3.17/USG
And C$1.055/ltre = US$3.36/USG

[Gas taxes are higher than in the US though not as high as Europe]

I recall in 1995 when I visited Germany gas was the equivalent of
C$1.60/litre when it was in the C$0.45/litre range at home.

Seen on CNBC.

Live from a midwest gas station a line up of at least 20 vehicles at a gas
station. I estimated that two thirds were trucks/SUV's, one quarter
minivans. Even four door sedans were rare.

Interviewing one of the waitees he says that he isn't filling up the tank
because of the price and that he has bought a bike.

You missed the AM price today, which was $1.20/L which was US$3.81/USG,
taxes are higher, but then Canada's government is running a small
surplus, rather then a huge deficit, like the US.

The real question though, if the government cut the taxes in half, would
that result in long term price reductions, or simply more price gouging
by the oil companies, which are mostly foreign owned.

Yeah, I'm putting off my beer run until the next time I have to drive
into work anyway. There's a liquor store near me, but their selection
is awful and their prices worse--and there's no way I'm going to ride
all the way out to Egypt and back with a trailer and two cases (48
bottles) of beer, plus wine and spirits. Even at $1/mile it'd be worth
it to me to drive, and gas is nowhere near that expensive.

That's the inevitable result of price controls: when a good's price is
less than it's worth, then people overstock (in this instance, almost
certainly it was a case of many, many drivers filling their cars with
the cheaper-than-elsewhere gas).

There's no such thing as price-gouging. The gas station sells its goods
at a market-clearing price. There's plenty of competition between
stations, resulting in razor-thin margins (1 penny a gallon is the
figure I've read).

Actually I walked by the two closest gas stations on my way to the pet food
store. This was around noon and both stations had C$1.055 on their signs.
[PetroCan and Canadian Tire.]

Note: While PetroCan's sign was able to handle the $1 plus figure the Can
Tire had a makeshift digit added to the sign. The PetroCan is a relatively
new rebuild.

That's the cheapest stuff they sell, I haven't put a premium or
mid-grade in the car since it cost more then $15 to fill the tank, and
that's about 3 cars ago. Price dropped back to $1.049 at some stations,
but with Labour day coming, and long weekends usually meaning higher
prices, I bet gas will be $1.09 or so for the weekend, dropping back to
$1.05 or so for the Wednesday/Thursday next week time period.

I am paying less (yes, less) for gasoline than I have in many, many

Thats a good thing, move to within a mile of either, and you can save
even more.... Actually a correction on the breaking point for me, I
vowed last week not to pay more then $1.00/L so when the car tank is
empty, the car is going to sit. If it sits more then a month, then I'll
pull the Insurance off it (leave on the comprehensive only, but raise
the deductable to say $2,000), if it sits more then six months, it goes
to car heaven.....

At the corner of Dufferin and Finch, in Toronto (was there this
morning), is an Esso, sign read 104.9, the crappy tire just south of
there on Dufferin was 119.6 this was around 11:00AM, neither is able to
handle the new prices, so they both had portable signs you fill in with
a marker to give the price. I figure they will come up with something
else as time goes on, either replacing the signs, pasting a 1 on the
front, or simply doing it differently.
