I'm not sure why I continue to look for these through google. I guess I won't be happy until drivers
of cars are held responsible for their actions. I get so damned tired of hearing the police say that
"it was an accident", the "sun was in their eyes", etc. etc.

I think its going to take a grass-roots effort at the state level to come up with legislation that
holds drivers responsible for their actions. The laws that are currently on the books obviously
aren't doing a bit of good.

    Ranting Maniacally,

The problem is, all of the people writing, approving, voting on, enforcing, and obeying such
legislation are car drivers. Few of them have ridden a bike since childhood. Fewer still ride on the
    roads regularly.

If they were removed there would be a certain period of readjustment.

If you make this a "safety" issue instead of a "bike" issue, you may have better luck. After all,
what we are talking about is making drivers responsible for their actions, wherever they are,
whatever the conditions, and whoever/whatever the vehicle is they encounter. Hell, it shouldn't even
have to be a vehicle collision, it could involve pedestrians.

There is a downside, of course. What are you doing to the image of cycling - both in the public's
mind, and in your own mind?

Do you suppose there are people in the motorcycling discussion groups who actively search out every
motorcycling fatality? How about on rec.cars.driving - do they get 40,000+ posts like this per year?
Is there a walking discussion group that mentions each of the 6000+ pedestrians killed each year?

    Morbid indeed.

Making drivers responsible for their actions is good, but I don't think this is the way to do it.

The biggest mistake this driver did was leave the scene of the accident.

A couple of years ago a similar fatal accident occurred not too far away. The CHP investigated for
several months until they finally located the driver and made an arrest. I don't remember what the
ultimate penalties were but they were not a slap on the wrist.

Maybe not, if he happened to be drunk.

I think irresponsible drivers should be compelled to -adopt- the cyclists they hit. At least, take
them home and support them for awhile.

You get beaned, you take your base.

The thought of having somebody like, say, Fabrizio rummaging through their medicine cabinets and
garages should scare drivers into being cautious.

    cheers, Tom

Not to mention helping plan their wardrobe. :-)
