    Thus is from Howard Peel's excellent website "The Bikezone at

    Howard Peel got a job as a Cycling Officer with the
    East Riding Council, and his experiences in that role are
    almost impossible to believe. Almost.

    In its mission statement the local authority claims as follows -

    "'Policy 12.51 The council has to ensure it sets a good example
    as a cycle friendly employer and encourage other employers to
    follow suit:"

    As the cycling officer Howard Peel felt it only right to cycle every
    day to his job at County Hall. However he was prevented from doing so
    and received a letter containing amongst other reasons, the following.

    1) Allowing cycles onto site did not fit in with the
    'vision' Property Services had for County Hall.

    2) The presence of cycles would degrade the quality
    of the working environment and make the site 'look untidy'.
    (Apparently the fumes and noise from motor vehicles being
    driven around the site did not adversely affect those
    working in County Hall!).

    3) It was against 'health and safety' regulations as the
    barrier across Register Square. 'Might kill cyclists'.
    (This was despite the fact that the barriers were fitted
    with detectors to stop them from lowering when anyone
    was stood under them!).

    Haven't we seen this story on URC before?

    I'm sure it's too late now, but wouldn't it have made an excellent
    testcase for getting that kind of attutide torad cycling ruled illegal
    in a court of law - especially given the victim's actual job!
    If Mr Peel didn't have a trade union to take up the case for him,
    maybe it could be of interest to the CTC?

    Unfortunately, ruling attitudes illegal, more epecially the more
    frankly absurd attitudes displayed by officialdom this case, doesn't
    make them any the less prevalent. People who ignore reams of scientific
    evidence concerning cycle safety, are highly unlikely to be swayed by
    the possible implications of a Court judgement in Yorkshire.

    at the moment. I'm tempted, but at 35 I'm probably too old.

    *Southern* Territory. Where's that then? You've got Western Australia
    (which is about half of Oz), *Northern* Territory, New South Wales,
    Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, Australian Capital Territory and South
    Australia.

    NT is bloody hot, even compared to here in WA. It's mid-winter there and
    they get the jumpers on when it drops to 25'C.

    If you're a nurse or a doctor you can more or less walk in. IT geeks just
    got kicked of the preferred proffession list (or whatever they call it).

    Bar staff are probably still on that list, because all the Austrailian ones
    are in London!

    But getting the council to review their behaviour in the light of the
    councils own stated policy should be possible. Somehow.
