No I'm not seeing a monster. I tried the energy drink MONSTER. Not once but twice. And I may be be
using before long or during ride. 16 oz package at $2.20.

I haven't used it but I read in a comparison report of the new so-called energy drinks, that Monster
and SuperStar (Or is it RockStar?) as well as several others have such huge amounts of total [censored]
and sugar in them that although you get the initial rush, you'll crash and burn shortly thereafer.
Apparently RedBull is still among the top energy drinks but only for 30-60 minutes.

Thats for sure. One time a couple years back I picked up some such drink with a ton of carbs (sugar,
really), and I sucked it down just prior to the ride. I don't remember what it was called (I called
it "liquid schwartz" - you have to have seen Spaceballs to understand). I came out of the gate at
blazing speeds...for about 20 minute. Suddenly I was tapped out, and had a pretty rough time for the
rest of the ride.

What did you fire up before buying that magic elixir? Water out of the tap is $10 a month here for
an almost unlimited amount of pure mountain water.

This is slightly OT, since not referring to drink, but HammerGel is the best gel I have used
(steadily for about 4-5 years now.) It has no simple sugars, only complex carbs, so there is no
spike and no crash of sugar levels due to the gel. There has now arrived one other gel (of which
I can't remember the the name right now) that makes the same claim. All the rest, Powergel,
Clifshot, etc use simple sugars and can set you up for just such a crash of insulin levels. I
still do use Gatorade as my drink (mixed half strength but with added salt) mainly because it
tastes better to me than water (from a Camelbak), and I use Clifbars on any longer rides (over 2
hours or so.) As long as I get the HammerGel in every 30 minutes or so, I don't experience any
bonking/crashing. When I fail to keep up with it, I'm more likely to have problems.

No that's the Cliff Bar, the cliff shot looks more like 4 day old mouldy diarrhea.

I haven't found them to be much help. I bought a whole box because I was bonking too early during
rides earlier this season. It made no difference.
They're nasty sticky, too - I imagine all the gels are like that, though. The one good thing about
Clif shots is that little hanger strip; I attach a small caribiner on my seat rail, and clip them
onto there so I don't make other things sticky.
