During the L2B last weekend I (and many others I am sure) managed to plough through a puddle of sticky tarmac just after one of the later refreshment stops, thinking it was just water on the road, not being aware that roads are quite capable of melting, and of course discovering otherwise when said sticky tarmac stuck to my tyres and started picking up stones and dry grass.
Managed to pick out the worst of it and make it to the finish OK, but I still have a fair amount of tarmac embedded in my tyres (Schwalbe Marathons). Does anybody have any tips for getting it out? It's pretty much everywhere on the rear tyre but the front's mostly escaped.

Reminds me of climbing an alp one day. We rode through the roadworks, and everything got very sticky. Of course people were watching, so we had to look good and keep going - we waited until we were out of sight before collapsing..

Aeons ago when I was a small child playing with marbles in the street gutter I would get slathered with melted tar on summer days. My Mum, for reasons which still escape me, removed the black crusts with a liberal dose of butter and much painful scraping. Don't know if it works on tyres, but you're welcome to the info! -- Brian G

I also hate it when roads are reopened too quickly after fresh tarmac has been laid.

Halfords sell "tar remover", apparently. I've removed tar with WD40 + elbow grease, then detergent. Carefully use a screwdriver to dig it out the tread.

I remember it as the bane of going to the beach when I was a lad. Lumps of "tar" used to wash up on the beach and stick to everything.

Don't worry about it on tyres. If you really care find a sandy track to drive along on a similarly hot day :-)

Can you persuade the CTC and BHRF to write to their Chairman, Rob Templeman, pointing out the problems with their helmets policy? They are trying hard to be a cyclists' store and am sure would not wish to annoy the leading cyclists' organisation.

BTSIDIGTTS!
with most sticky organic stains, the trick is to dissolve the solvent before it dries; if dry then you will have to try and dissolve the offending material itself (which with some solvents is likely to take the tyres with it). It should fall off of its own accord. White spirit or Turps may work, try on a tyre first though.

Baby Oil (liquid paraffin) might help and won't evaporate quickly, but you don't want it on your rims...

Only because they can make money selling the damned things.
I think it's more likely that Fat Angie has gone there and fed them the usual "think of the children" line and they see an opportunity to look "pro road safety" without actually stopping selling radar detectors and in-car phone kits.
