Bill B, those are the kind of winds we have around here in
SW Minnesota everyday. When the wind is not howling it is
eerie. Right now for instance, it is gusting to 40 mph. I
will wait until later this evening to go out on my bike when
normally the wind finally drops a bit. That is the one thing
that really ruins cycling here on the plains. I much prefer
hills to wind.

I watched a heron fly overhead today. The heron went
backwards relative to the ground during the stronger
wind gusts.

We are planning a tour from Memphis to New Orleans in late
May early June. What are the usual wind speeds and direction
for this area at that time. Also any insight into the route
would be appreciated. Thanks

Bill, et al. I live up here in NH and we have been fighting
those winds for the past three weeks. Glad to hear I am not
alone. Well at least today it is warm and the wind is warm.
Hate those raw days and cold winds.

Here in Memphis the winds are out of the south west from 7-
10. Thunder boomers in the late afternoon. Not too bad
usually. I hope this helps. Art in Memphis

7-10. Thunder boomers in the late afternoon. Not too bad

While headwinds don't help the folks going to New Orleans,
I'm flying into Memphis this Friday and heading towards
Charleston, WV. Hoping for some tailwinds along the way.

I've ridden only two small segments of a possible route
between Memphis and New Orleans. In fall of 2003, I came
across the Mississippi at Helena and rode up to Memphis...
and in spring 2001, I was riding across USA and came down US
61 to Baton Rouge.

Based on very limited impressions: US 61 in northen MS had
almost no shoulder. I gave up before Tunica and took back
roads into Memphis. US 61 north of Baton Rouge was fine.
Riding into the middle of the city, this was a poor route.
There is a lot more routes through here than the very small
slides I rode.

flying into Memphis with? What route will you be taking from

My bent is a TourEasy. However, I'm cheating and riding a
wedgie this next week. Mostly because find it easier to box
that bike at the airport and fly away. If someone has good
tips on boxing a TE at the airport, appreciate that. When
touring by bent, I mostly do one way rentals of minivan.
However, coming from Colorado that is a bit far this time.

My plan is to find my way to 14 out of Memphis and then go
via Brownsville, Humboldt, Clarksville, Bowling Green,
Louisville, Frankfort, Morehead, Huntington to Charleston.
