Missed Chicago Marathon Registration - Any suggestions?

from your comments, it sounds like you're pretty new to this.

There's a reason registration for most marathons closes early -- they don't
want people doing it on the spur of the moment because the kind of person who
does that is probably not well prepared.

Philadelphia marathon allows entry until quite late.

Don't see the point of doing "your own" marathon. If you're going to run a
race, then enter a race. If you're going to do a training run, go outside and
do a training run.

No, but when they heard you wanted to join, they cutoff membership.

No, you're doing the right thing! After cutting off registration, the
Chicago marathon organizers start monitoring the rec.running newsgroup,
looking for people in exactly your predicament.

Whatever you do, do *not* pick up the phone and talk to anyone! People
hate that, and will only slam the door tighter in your face.

marathon in the Chicago area in October, you're gonna have to travel,

Chicago closed its registration because it reached the max number it
would take (~40,000). Marathons do not have registration deadlines because
of the noble reason you state. They have them because at some point you
have to shut it down. Small marathons may allow registration on race day or
the day before.

www.marathonguide.com will help you with a list of marathons. Fox
Cities is an option (2 weeks earlier) or Detroit a couple of weeks later
(probably a better option).

Thanks for the marathonguide link. This is exactly what I needed. There
are a couple of good options here the following week...Indy is pretty close
or Ashland WI might be worth the drive. I really appreciate the help.

I did Milwaukee last year (and posted a race report here, I think). It
was a nice race; i had a few minor complaints, but mostly I thought it
was good.

Yeah, good memory!

I think I posted a report for the 50k as well, although my IT band
flareed up and I DNFed for what I think was the first time in my career.
I got different shoes and the knee seems to be holding up much better
this year. (Actually, it was fine last year until the 50k).

I'm doing a Marathon this year (Philadelphia) and plan to do an Ironman
next year, but I think I'll eventually tackle a 50k again.
