  1. Greetings,

Since nobody else has mentioned it yet, MiniMed has a solution the 168 unit limit problem on their
    Paradigm pumps.

They now have a version (the 712) which has a longer chamber and longer , 300 unit, reservoir.

The longer reservoir protrudes out a little further from the case. We will need to see whether it
    causes any complaints.

It appears that the 508 pump is being phased out with the advent of the 712.

BTW, the bolus wizard has been extremely popular with upgraders who count carbs, and we are seeing
better insulin bolus dose decisions as a result.

    Cheers, WCB

  2. After 20 years type 1 I have decided to go on the pump. Is Minimed the pump of choice?

  3. Maureen,

I suggest you join the IP list and talk to the many pumpers there. insulin-pumpers.orginsulin-pumpers.org it
also depends upon what your insurance will cover, unless you're going to pay for it yourself.

    I use a MiniMed 508.

    good luck.

  4. 508. My wife has the Paradigm. I like the 508 better, but I just found out here that there is a new
Paradigm that holds about 300 units coming out soon (?).

The 508 does pretty much everything a pumper needs and it's slow delivery of boluses at a rate of
1.5/minute is a feature that is sure to draw a large debate, if history is a predictor of future
events. Minimed feels that insulin will "pool" in the subcutaneous tissue and lead to dosing errors
if it is injected too fast. Be that as it may, I've had 3 different Minimed pumps since 1996 and all
I can tell you is they have changed my life for the better. eat when you want. sleep in on the
weekends. exercise when you want with very little "lead time" to worry about when on Humalog, even
an intelligent bolusing method for pizza and high fat dinners.

    any questions, fire away... dave

  5. Maureen,

Minimed used to be a first class outfit. After their purchase by Medtronic, many things, including
customer service, went down hill. I am currently on a 511, and for the most part, it does its job
well. I am very seriously considering the Animas as a replacement when the current warranty runs
out. One thing to consider is which pump(s) are your doctors comfortable supporting? Regardless of
which pump you wind up getting, best of luck with it. 🙂

  6. I have a 511. Given the choice, now, I would probably choose another maker.

The pump has not been bad--I did have to replace it when my original one was submerged 6 inches in
water (look at older messages in this group at groups.google.com for details on that fiasco).

It seems that every month or so, I am hearing additional bad news about Medtronic/Minimed concerning
    their customer support.

I am monitoring my relationship with the company. My last e-mail inquiry took 6 days before
a response. After writing a letter complaining about their service, it took two months
before I received a written response (although I will admit, I was phoned within a week of
    mailing my letter).

If there is no improvement, my next pump will not be made by them--and I refuse to upgrade to the
512 to give them even financial support to continue their current mode of operation.

  7. The MiniMed Paradigm is my pump of choice. Mainly because it's the smallest and looks and wears like
a pager. I also like the menuing structure and that it doesn't use icons that look like syringes.

I have tried to get people on the IP list to discuss pros and cons of their models, but most people
only have good to say. There is no critical analysis.

Here's a site that has a table which gives the specifications of each pump.

  8. I agree with you totally; when MiniMed was bought by Medtronic their service went to hell. I don't
trust them anymore, but I'm not about to give up my pump, either. sigh.

well i am having problems getting them to return calls. have also sent them cert letters and have
    not gotten an answer.<card was
    returned>

the 511 was sold as water proof and then they send a letter saying HAY GUYS WE GOOFED its not
    water proof.

now if you have a pump failure they just drop one off at your door.they are cheap to build.

but in my opinion if you have a real problem you could be screwed.

am planning on taking legal action soon. hell all i want is an answer to a few questions. there not
calling or writing is causing the problem.

i am not a lawsuit happy person. no one wins but its there fault for not wanting to contact me and
my lawyer is writing the next letter.

    case

  10. you know why they don't return your phone calls don't you? 🙂 you are now on their [censored] list for

  12. The only person who "wins" with a class action suit is the lawyer. Most plaintiff's get only a tiny
fraction of the money that is awarded while the lawyers walk away with millions. If you have a suit,
file it on its own merits.

  13. cool! We pumpers have to stick together! I think Minimed doesn't want anyone to keep their old pumps
because they are afraid the sale of a pump will cut into their new pump sales. Why else would they
have been pressuring me to return my old pump 2 years after the fact? Greed.

Call the supply "800" number before you listen to the salesman. That's who I talked to today.

That must be some king size pump if it can hold a 300ml reservoir......

  19. Dave,

The Paradigm 511 has a user option to calibrate to U-50. It is then much simpler to use U-500 since
everything was simply 10x more ,,, 0.1 unit was really 1 unit, 1.0 was really 10 units, etc.

U-500 Humulin R is significantly more viscous, but it works in a pump. The onset of action is slower
    than U-100 Humulin R though.

Perhaps MiniMed was uncomfortable with type 2's using U-500 in their pumps....the U-50 option is
missing from the 512 pump. Even so, a 511 version would hold over 750 units of insulin.

BTW, last I heard U-200 Humalog pump insulin was still on the drawing board.

  20. VERY interesting, doc. It didn't occur to me that while there is U500 concentration insulin on the
market, there isn't any Humalog. U200 Humalog would be the cat's meow for some insulin needy pumping
folks to avoid changing their sets every day and a half. I've had a few spells where I've taken over
100 units in a day. Not even sick, either; just a combo of factors like bad diet, etc. Generally I
use 33-50 per day, so I can just get three days out of a set change. I don't like the way the
reservoir sticks out of the 508 when set to the 300U mode, so mine can hold a max of 150.

In my opinion, pumping regular defeats one of great advantages of pump therapy. Quick acting insulin
for corrective action and quicker dissipation in anticipation of exercise, allowing a more varied
lifestyle. I pump Velosulin BR for quite some time, and really disliked the lag time. I couldn't
wait until Humalog hit the stores. I was the first one in our area to get it.
