But there was another Cofidis rider who changed bikes after riding off the ramp. They must hire their mechanics by finding kids who will work for phone cards. Can't remember which race (classic I think) it was earlier this year, but I think Nico Mattan's chain broke.

I happened to be standing at the 700m to go mark and Miller's chain came off right in front of me. I had been keeping track of the time splits and Miller passed me 7 seconds ahead of McGee's time.
Did it come off due to bouncing from cobbles? I'd be surprised if he was shifting between rings. I didn't think that was necessary.

The stories I read indicate he took it off himself against his DS' advice. Suddenly I remember all of the stories about his mechanical naiveté.

Yes, in the Amstel Gold Race on one of the many hills, Nico Mattan's chain dropped off his chainring. He almost had half the péleton smack into him because he suddenly slowed down that much.

French television interviewed him after his prologue, and between all the puffs and gasps for air and all his disappointment, he murmured something in French about it happening quite regularly that the chain would drop off the outer plate. "It's a problem with our plateaux." he kept repeating.
The commentators speculated that yes, it was probably because of the cobbles. Then again, I haven't seen a similar problem for any other rider, so he might just have been very unlucky today...
At least he didn't throw his bike on the side and give up like he did in Spain last year...

The strict translation is ~Plate~ but when used to cycling parlance it (usually) refers to chain rings of which there are (again usually) two: grand plateau (outer/big) and petit plateau (inner/small)
And in English, plate usually refers to a spoke protector.

I wonder if a chain is more likely to fall off of a modern ramped chainring (which is designed to allow a smooth slip to the small ring off of certain teeth) than an old-fashioned ring with uniform teeth (like a track ring).
Usually when my chainring falls completely off I can shift it back on with the front derailleur. Alas. --Shayana Kadidal
