  1. Rock n Roll or something fun. Someone was playing YMCA at NYC last year -
watching 5000 runners spelling out Y M C A with their arms was hilarious.

    "The Wall".... LOL :-)

I'll be volunteering as a course marshall at a marathon this
weekend. My job will be to stand at an intersection near Mile
18 and make sure the runners go straight through the
intersection. I'll also be giving words of encouragement.

I'm planning on parking my pickup truck alongside the road.
My daugher suggested we put a boom box playing some music on
    the tailgate of the pickup.

Any suggestions on what music I should play? The first song
that comes to mind is Pink Floyd's "The Wall". Kind of cruel,
I think I'll skip that one. Any better suggestions?

    Try this CD:
    Ultra Chilled v.01
(Track 5, Bent, Swollen is quite nice.)

    Hope that helps...

Personally, I'd rather have NO music being blasted than risk having [censored]
music blasted. When I did my first Marathon (21 years ago, with a solid
HS cross country career just behind me but no real idea how to do a
Marathon), I ran the first 18 miles in 2:10 and then hit the wall. At
about mile 19 they were playing "I'm burning up for your love" by
Madonna. Loudly. And since I was walking at that point, I heard it for a
very long time. I remember thinking that that crappy music was giving me
a headache, but it was probably related to me bonking.

Anyway, I've always liked Madonna, but I still hate that song.

How about your favorite redneck tune, "My dog got green teeth" ?

  8. Eye of the Tiger is a popular race song.

I've got a running playlist on my MP3. Some selections off of that:
The Go-Go's "We got the beat" has a nice running rhythm. I always like
"Born to Run" by Bruce Springsteen for the message. (Helps if your name
is Wendy.) I also like "Start Me Up" by the Cars to get my rear in gear
or "Pulled Up" by the Talking Heads when I'm going up a hill. I choose
songs with a fast beat and an uplifting message for exercising. (So no
songs called "Surrender" or "Fall Down".)

In practice you're going to get pretty [censored] at hearing any single
song over and over again, so how about you make a mix that YOU'D run to
and then play that so a variety of songs might be happening?

Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber. This is the theme song from
Platoon. Every time I hear this I can see William Dafoe (Sergeant
Elias) running out of the jungle while being shot repeatedly in the
back by the viet cong, while stumbling and arms flailing. And
    finally...the ultimate bonk.

Anything BUT the "Theme from Rocky" and Springstein's "Born to Run".
How ironic that I *hate* those songs and am a runner. When I get those
two songs in my head I want to stop by the side of the road and pound
    my head until they're gone.

Hows about Tom Petty "Runnin' on Empty"? Anything loud a raucus,
Aerosmith, VanHalen (David Lee Roth only please).

I'd avoid the "Theme from Chariots of Fire" or you'll have folks going
    in slow motion.

I just thought of another one. Whenever I'm on a good long bike ride I
somehow get Talking Heads "Road to Nowhere" going round my head. Good
peppy tune, 18 miles really does feel like nowhere.

Have fun and bring ear plugs.

    "I Will Survive" :-)

The other thing that occured to me was that dirge you'll
occasionally hear in movies, esp. those with a gothic or fantasy
element. E.g., I think it's in final battle sequence in
_Excaliber_. Most people should recognize it even if they can't
name it and it has a nice mix of despair and defiance.

I'll have a "music police" moment here... do you mean "Shake It Up" by
the Cars or "Start Me Up" by the Rolling Stones. Either would be good
    actually.

At the 2000 Sydney Olympics I was in the main stadium at the end of
the 50k walk - a British guy who was at his fifth Olympics came in
looking totally shattered, some time after the winners. The stadium
loudspeakers played "500 Miles" by the Proclaimers ("and I would walk
500 miles, and I would walk 500 more..."😉 and it obviously gave the
guy a huge boost, with the crowd cheering him home. For me personally,
that was just about the best moment of the games.

    Other suggestions:
In the End - Linkin Park
Hero of the Day - Metallica
