  1. I'm considering using a metronome on my training rides. The digital device has cadences from 40 to
over 200. Any usefulness in this?

Are you planning to play the piano while riding?

Um...that's interesting...why not? Presumably your metronome is at hand, while you would have to buy
    a cadence computer.

    Okay, I give you permission.

I imagine that it would annoy the hell out of you in less than 10 minutes.

Other options are a computer with a cadence option or music at the tempo you are aiming for. Of
course there are safety, legal issues if you choose the music route.

Sounds like an interesting idea, especially if you know what your goals are.

Trust me on this one -- it sounds like a great idea, but, in practice, it sucks. Imagine having to
ride while paying attention to one certain sound and synching your pedal strokes to it. That gets
    old really fast.

I had a racer friend that use to do this on his rollers with an old fashion metronome in the late
1970's. Nothing wrong with it if you have a need or reason to work on cadence Rod Raisanen

  9. Somebody needs to answer the OP's question. I'll take a shot at it.

Hell, yes, a metronome is a crazy idea.

  10. Oh, sorry.

That would be a "Metro GNOME".

Oh, I wouldn't think so. My HRM starts to beep at my heart rate when it gets above a certain
threshold and I often pace my cadence to it. I can do the same thing when my heartbeat is pounding
in my ears, and _that_ noise can't be turned off at all, at least not viably.

The annoyance probably depends on the sound the metronome makes. Small digital metronomes emit a
cheap "tock tock" sound, which can be annoying when playing piano if you are used to the sound from
a traditional mechanical metronome, but I find it's more enjoyable just to use the drum rhythms from
my Roland keyboard. I wouldn't recommend strapping an electric piano to your bike, though: the
    amplifier's a bit cumbersome.

You can drape the headphones over just one ear, but the chief problem would be the discomfort from
wearing headphones under a helmet. I've done parking/traffic control on bike for special events at
the church, and radio headsets are literally a pain in the ear.

The basic idea of a metronome isn't too bad if you already have one, but they're kinda bulky and for
the $35 you might be better off spending it on a fancier bike computer.
