  1. I have now finally used my meths-burning stove and I like it a lot.
It's slow to boil water but the meths is cheap and the whole thing (not
a Trangia but very like it) is stable and I think I'm in love. The only
thing is - the meths. Why did no one tell me how utterly disgusting the
smell of meths is? Why did no one warn me of the totally vile and
nauseating gag-making aroma? So, here's the question: Given that I
want to continue using my Trangisn't, what can I use instead of meths?
And can I send my teenagers into a shop to buy it?

Meths is only methanol with some nasty horrible purple stuff to stop you
drinking it. Have a browse for chemical suppliers on the web and see if
you can find some one prepared to supply it to you.

    You may have to promise:-
    1. Not to drink it
    2. Not to use it to make biodiesel*
    3. Not to use it to make recreational drugs*

Alternatively, have a look for model aircraft suppliers. Radio
controlled planes use methanol in their fuel.
    e.g. http://www.modeltechnics.com/ sell 4.55L of methanol for £5.95.

    * Both of these uses appeared when I googled methanol!!

No, the smell puts me off. I prefer paint stripper.

If you get methylated spirit (meths is typically only about 15% methanol,
the rest being ethanol) without the purple dye then you get taxed at an
extortionate rate on it and it suddenly gets very expensive. Regrettably
there is nothing that is as clean burning as alcohol that's easily
available. You could try naptha or Coleman fuel but that reeks worse than
    meths sadly.

    depends where you are walking.

I bought bottles of "Spiritus" in Germany and brought them back over
    here to use for windowcleaning[1].

They don't have a dye in Germany just something in in that is supposed
to make it revolting to drink.

No, it's mostly ethanol, with some fairly innocuous purple stuff to show you
it's not supposed to be drunk and a bitter additive (pyridine or Bitrex) to
put you off trying to drink more than a sip. There may well be some
methanol or water present, but it is likely to be about 90% ethanol
    ("alcohol"😉.

I've used the fluid from the now obsolete spirit duplicating machines eg
'Banda' quite successfuly in spirit burners. It smells OK, but leaves a
little liquid residue which seems harmless.

BTW, some may advise you to try methanol. Don't - it's toxic by
absorbsion through the skin, causing liver and kidney damage.

On further reading, this is probably good advice. I did find a page
that discusses methanol poisoning in detail and it makes for interesting
reading. It appears that the treatment of choice for methanol poisoning
    is .....ethanol!

Get a gas converter (make sue it fits your not-a-trangia). There are some
fairly cheap types (I expect Aldi or Lidl have bucketloads next to the baked
beans!) but the proper converter is expensive. All the Trangia benefits
    without the stink.

Mmm! I remember the Banda machines - I used to love the smell of
    freshly copied papers :-)

You do have to absorb a reasonable amount of methanol through the skin
which is quite tricky. You would have to soak a large amount of yourself
and clothing in order to be in problems - however that of course is
probably the most likley accident scenario with a spilled/smashed bottle.

What, the teenagers? Well then, they should be... But seriously, I
wasn't sure if stuff like meths came under the same regulations as
lighter fuel, petrol and the like, which can't be sold to under 16s. I
have a 17 yr old, but the more reliable of the two is only 15.
