Could anyone give me some help with information on the Merrick Dumfries and Galloway. I understand the difficulties in giving generalisations on mountains, but I would like opinions on the going i.e. reasonably good going or soft or boggy, start point the Bruce's Stone Glen Trool. My reason for asking is one member of the party is less than fully fit through an old back injury and she is really keen to join us on the walk. While confident she can do an eight mile hill walk, daylight hours are short this time of year and I would like to let her rest frequently if necessary. Any description or thoughts on the Merrick would be of great interest.

Sorry but I have only climbed The Merrick once and that was in combination with Shalloch on Minnoch to the north. The return through a forest break to the west was pretty awful in places due to water tenches and bog.

Never done a day walk from Glen Trool, but Galloway MRT have some walks listed here with descriptions and route files:-

I walked the merrick last spring from glen trool,it was an enjoyable walk to the summit,descending to loch enoch then via loch nedrecken (forgive spelling) from loch enoch it was very boggy,its a good walk to do on a frosty day when most of this would freeze,a bit heavy going & unpleasant otherwise.

Thanks for this; I think we will probably do a straight forward assent and descent from the Bruce's Stone Glen Trool on the same path, unusual for me, but I think it best for one particular member of the group. We are staying about forty minutes from Glen Trool and have Tue, Wed and Thursday of next week so hopefully we will get an opportunity weather wise for the walk. Thanks again, MP
