Thanks, good stuff, but just confirms, yet again, what we already
knew. Not going to get any better either since Pevanage has signed on
for another couple of years. Can't find where I read it though it was

In the old Tour of Texas days (or was it an Aqua Fest race?) one guy had pink
outfit and his pink frame had a perfectly painted Freddy Mertzz on the
downtube. Probably been done elsewhere but was fun to see in real life.

Great article. 'Damned to victory', classic Eddy.

Glad to see someone remembers the Violet Crown promoted AquaFest races
in Zilker Park! I raced my factory painted pink Eddy Merckx in those
races. I got to do the Gruene Time Trial the year Lance and Eddy
participated. We started 5 minutes ahead of them and thought about
dropping back to watch them ride. Race instincts got the better of us
so rode back upcourse to cheer them in. I got a big grin out of Eddy as
I pointed out my frameset when he passed by. Also got an autograph from
him later on.

A favorite Tour of Texas Zilker Park memory was when Grewal lost the
leader's jersey there on the last stage. Woudn't have thought it
possible but that's what makes bike racing so interesting. You just
never know.

I was there that day, too.

I do miss the Tour of Texas. For a few years it was great. So many memories.

listed in the 1992 EM catalog. Forget what binder had the frameset
dimensions that described it as a 'criterium' model. Steeper seat angle
(74 degrees), shallow fork rake and higher bottom bracket. Uses
Columbus SLX tubes and SP stays. It's due a repaint after many years of
racing. Original Gita warehouse clearance price was around $700 thru
Freewheeling Bicycles. More info than you probably wanted to know.

Thanks. My friend got a blue one, 1989 IIRC - pretty sure it wasn't the crit
model, nor SLX. Seems like back then colors were red, blue, green. Basic
color - white decals. I haven't seen his bike in years (nor mine - Masi Gran
Criterium - HEY, so *that's* what I'm always banging my head on in the
garage!). Both of us got ours at Freewheeling, too. haven't been in there in
probably 7 or 8 years.

Some guys just don't do well in the direct spotlight? Don't handle the
pressure of bring first that well? It's strange - as though Ullrich has the
such great natural ability that he can just do a modest amount of work (by
pro cycling standards) and rather easily get up into the top 2 or 3.
Usually you don't see anything but hard driving competitive types at the
very top, but casual racers probably are found quite frequently in the
lower ranks. They just don't have abilities like Jan, the guy who always
gets the easy 'B-plus' in school.

If I do I gotta rebuild my bottom bracket. But I've been using that excuse
for too many years. Went shopping for pants today. May actually rebuild the
damn thing.
