  1. I was reading my monthly cycling mag (cycling pro? can't remember-
it is at work) dinnertime, and something I read about
Pantani has stuck in my head. It was about his expulsion
from the Giro, in, para-quote 'the same style as Merckx's
expulsion for doping in the 1969 Giro'.

Is this true? Was he a druggy?

I will bring the magazine home with me tomorrow so I can
quote it properly, if it helps.

    Love to know your thoughts.

are you kidding? they named a drug company after him,
    due to his exploits.

  4. I have a copy of the mag. It was an interview with Merckx on
his best Tour win. He said that his first was his best (in
his opinion) because of his expulsion from the Giro. He is
quoted in Cycle Sport ed. Feb. 2002 as saying: "My first
victory in the Tour de France in 1969 was my best one ever.
It was a contrast to what the Italians did to me in the Giro
a couple of months earlier. They tried to bribe me first,
offered me some money, but when I refused to sell my
personal chances they put dope in my bidon. I was suspended,
but eventually was able to ride the Tour and I won it."

Did he also tell who put the drugs in his bidon the two
    other times he tested positive?

Ofcourse he was (although 'druggy' implies an addiction,
which I don't think he had). Merckx did not win his tours on
    water and sugar, you know.

    Jonathan.

  8. One of Merckx's positive doping results was for either
pseudoephedrine or ephedrine in a cold medication. That
stuff's not even a prescription medication in the US (think
    'Pseudofed'😉.

People have died taking it (I recall a certain football
player - or was it baseball?). Don't underestimate the kick
this stuff provides. If I take it at 4 in the afternoon (for
a cold, mind you) I don't sleep much that night.

That's ephedra ... Not Pseudoephedrine HCl
