Memory Map, rip off?

Learn to accept a few expensive realities with computer mapping software in
the UK.

1) Every now and then, the suppliers want to update their product, or use
some updated OS map data. But the OS requires them to re-sell the maps to
their customers (no you cannot use the old data you bought with the new
software). So, when there is an upgrade, expect to have to repurchase your
maps all over again.
They've all done it; Memory Map, Anquet, Tracklogs. They all blame the OS'
licensing system, which requires the customer to purchase the maps they paid
for again (actually paid twice, once with your taxes until the OS was
privatised, and once when you bought the software).

2) Because of (1), re-assess the market each time you need to buy new maps.
I think Quo are the cheapest at the moment, £80-£100 depending on options
for the whole of Great Britain in OS 1:50,000.

I think you are being a touch unreasonably - they say, and I think that
I believe them, that OS insist that each new version has mapping that
the previous version can't read, but upgrade prices are very reasonable.

I started off with four CD's which covered most of Scotland in 10km
squares, which one could knit together, Big problem was that the four
CD's met at GR 000 000 just up the scree from Loch Etchachan in the
Cairngorms.

Now I'm moved to GB - North, which carefully misses Snowdonia, but comes
down a bit further South on the right hand side.

What pisses me off with the current version is that it will no longer
let me do two prints (one to walk with and other left in the kitchen for
wife to give to MRT if need be. All previous versions would print as
many copies as I had coloured ink for, but this one won't!

I'd get round that by printing to a PDF writer and printing from that.

I use this one http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/ which is
Windows only and then only up to XP, Vista chucks a hissy fit at it.

Other PDF writers are available...

Check out PDF995 (www.pdf995.com). $9.95 (as the name suggests) and
works happily with Vista and x64.

I too use this to print my own choice of maps, and not be limited by
the software.
