He was mentioned a lot this Vuelta because he was very much like Nozal
- a long-time team rider who had an amazing Vuelta. The difference between he and Nozal is that
Melchor won.

I think he was a 2nd Lt to Indurain on the Banesto team in the early 90's. I will have to review
some of my tapes to confirm. But Mauri was a good rider.

Speaking of it, It speaks for Indurain that it's hard to remember who might have been his
lieutenants. If one remembers teammates, it's over the hill Delgado, weakling-brother Prudencio, or
the French Bernard and De las Cuevas who had their own agenda. Wait, I remember Rué doing some good
pacework.... But his team wasn't matching the quality contenders' teams have these days.

I remember Rue doing some good work, but you're right, the rest of the team was forgettable.

Of course, we in Holland all remember Erwin Nijboer as Indurain's faithful (no other
qualification possible) lieutenant, a captain on the road for the flat stages. But I think he
only rode 1 or 2 Tours.

abilities, he was furthermore a loose cannon.

Garmendia, still a good pro, was invisible back then IIRC.

I'm surprised Prudencio was there just once, apparently blinded by the publicity he got. I vaguely
remember there once was a TT where Big Mig almost eliminated his brother with the time cut.

I think Prudencio's "strength" was in the TTT. Apparently all the Banesto riders were apprehensive
about who would draw the short straw and ride behind Big Mig who's turns at the front were long and
hard - there was a risk that you would lose your place eary in the test which would result in
certain elimination. Prudencio drew the short straw as it was considered that it would be easier for
him to ask Miguel to slow down.

But the thing is, the Banesto team must have sorted out the issues pretty well. Compare and contrast
with the Gan TTT performance in Calais with Chris Boardman on the front, clearly stronger than all
his other teammates (I think he dropped them all at one point) and a pretty woeful placing.
