TRAK Cycles in Southland Shopping Centre (Cheltenham - south of Moorabbin) sells the Mongoose
Crossway 850 for just under a thousand - I got mine there in February for $999. I'm sure if your
friends are buying two, they'll get a good deal. There are several less expensive Mongoose models,
but I don't know the prices.

Suggest searching the on-line Yellow pages for bike shops, that might help.

THE best place for them to look for good touring bikes is Christie Cycles in Burwood Road, Hawthorn.
They are a touring & tandem specialist. Your price range is a bit low, but Ian and his staff will be
able to set them up with something worthwhile.

Peter, I did a web search for Melbourne touring clubs. I have downloaded your page's membership form
and I will be 'haunting' the site for a week or two to work out what you guys and girls do before
making any decisions, but, nice site to start with!

You'd better hurry if you're going to Christie's because they are about to close down. The
business has been for sale, but no-one bought it, so the owner is shutting up shop (possibly
within a month or so). My source is a friend who works there & has been told to look for a new job
due to them closing.

Certainly not a *traditional* tourer, but thats partly because few people buy them any more. They
will find a suitable mountain bike or hybrid/comfort in that price range. Its even possible to add
front panniers. Just watch the stay length, especially if he has big feet.

As for "steel", welcome to the 21st century. Iron is out and alum is
in. See other threads. It now cheaper to make alum frames to the same standards. Just get a
removable derailer hanger :-)

There is a place called Bicycle Recycle in South Rd. They had a good range and friendly staff. I
didn't buy my own bike there - but I have bought all the kid's bikes there. The bikes are
reconditioned and only a fraction of the price for new.
