Melb: Cyclist killed on Kingsway

A cyclist has been killed in a collision with a tip truck in inner
Melbourne.
Police say the truck, driven by a 27-year-old man from Glenroy, was
turning off the Kings Way about 2.50pm (AEST) when the incident
occurred.
"The tip truck was in Kings Way turning right into Albert Road, and
it appears the cyclist was doing the same," a police spokesman said.
The cyclist, a man aged in his 30s, died at the crash scene from
"massive head injuries", the spokesman also said.
Police are yet to release any further details of the dead man's
identity.
The crash resulted in traffic diversions for almost an hour.
"The scene is slowly starting to clear now of emergency services,"
the spokesman said.
The death takes Victoria's road toll to 209 dead, down from 241 at
the same time last year.

Though it is in the "National" section as a traffic advisory.

I had bit of minor convoluted fcukup on the roads today. A bit of minor road rage, resulting in moi and steed taking evasive action away from the road rage, that then resulted in a mechanical.

Then shortly afterwards again having to deal with the idiot who started it, who was trying to rev the engine as if to scare me off the road when the bike was slightly stuffed and I couldn't get out of the way swiftly enough. Fcuker.

Anyway, enough venting. Bike rego is complete bollox.

If you're around tomorrow, listen into 3CR in the morning (Wed 13/9) between 9-10am on City Limits, the hosts have asked me for a interview about the Hell Ride palaver, cyclist safety, community attitudes, basically the whole box and dice.

Also currently updating the WoJ site with news updates et al. Maybe some reading material there that tickles your interest.

"A CYCLIST is dead after being hit by a tip truck on a major Melbourne road.
The man had been riding at the intersection of Kings Way and Albert Rd, South Melbourne, when he was struck by the Kenworth truck just before 3pm yesterday.

Traffic was disrupted for several hours as police examined the scene to work out what led to the tragedy."

awful... I've carefully vetted the news around the house today to avoid the missus seeing this and worrying about me riding again...

While things like this always remind me to ride safe routes wherever possible (I wouldn't go near Kings Way myself), they upset me that we have to think this way and can't feel safe no matter where we might need to ride.

That the media isn't interested is no huge surprise, and probably would be the same if it were car vs car - and in a way I'm pleased - Nothing worse than scaring off all those newbie cyclists out there who have just emerged.... Still - any encouragement to ride/drive safe is worthwhile.

I'm trying to do the same thing, don't want the girlfriend reading stuff like this, she says she worries everytime I go for a ride as it is. She has said she would rather not know that sort of thing as it makes it worse, at least she's up front about it I suppose. But what can you do?

Was riding on Beach Road last night, stopped at the ped lights is Mentone, and 3 cars went through the orange/red and one even went through the red lightwhile I was stopped at it. Pity I didn't have my phone with me.

trucks are a a different category of road user again. Cars are number 1, rule supreme and can do no wrong (unless driven by hoons,drunks or the uninsured). Trucks are dangerous, congesting roads, causing havoc at peak hour, running red lights, taking up more than one lane when turning, too big to see around, and are therefore "baddies". So it's ok and justifiable to allocate blame to trucks :p

True - the report's wording does indicate this. Regardless of cause (which I have no idea of, so won't speculate), it's a loss for all concerned ... the old adage of "always ride as if expecting the worst" still holds, of course ... 🙁

Never liked Kingsway. I used to live around the corner from Bike Now, and would shudder whenever I saw any cyclists riding past me along it whilst I walked to work during peak hour ... it'd take a fair-sized cattle prod to get me to ride on it.

You and me both. It's one of the roads on my list of "do not ride on
this road, under any circumstance." (Or it would be, if I had such a
list, and if it were comprehensive; given that Kingsway is out of my
area, it wouldn't be very high on that list.)

In theory, bikes should be able to ride on any road cars can drive on.
In practice, it doesn't work.

My thoughts go out to the deceased's loved ones.

I currently live across the road from BikeNow, was riding to the Gym yesterday at about 3pm, and saw the police and traffic and then I saw the destroyed bike and a blanket over the body, given my meeting with a car about 2 months ago now, I turned around and rode straight back home, just brought back all the bad memories and then made me realise how lucky I was, then just my bike and not me was destroyed. Just sat at home for a while thinking of what the family is going through, there were flowers there today.

Every time I see a bike rider on that road I cringe, the only time I touch Kings Way on my bike, is when i cross it going on Park St or Albert Road, the reason why I will risk a fine and ride on the foot paths to the gym, every time I do it.

Same, can't stand it. Similar feelings about Wurundjeri Way and Charles Grimes Bridge. I'll ride virtually any road (legally) but those roads, including Montague St, truly put the frighteners on me.

Refer here to the interview I did this morning, about 20 minutes, touches on community & media attitudes to cyclists, cyclist licensing/rego, the Hell Ride incident, yesterday's fatal on Kings Way etc. Waffled on a bit at times, probably needs editing, but hey, not a bad effort first thing in the morning before coffee. 😉

Full marks for getting out there and trying to get the message out but, I'm sorry to say I bailed out after about 6 minutes. I gave up after I started finishing your sentences for you. I don't mean to be harsh, but, yes you were waffling.

Do you have a script of answers that you can trot out for these interviews? I'm sure they ask a fairly predictable (or easily predicted) set of questions, so having some stock answers would work well. It would make you sound more polished and on top of your subject, even when you haven't had your first cup of coffee. ;-)

well I listened to all of it, I can honestly say I don't think you waffled on at all, it was a discussion and you made your points well and discussed their questions with them, its not a black and white case of this and that. It was a very good open forum type segment and I think you came across excellent.
