Long cage mechs can handle a wider range of gears than short cage AFAIK.

I'ld heard that as well, but I used to run an 11-34 cassette with a
short cage, not problem.
I ran it because I ripped off the long cage within the first 10 miles of
a new bike, got nervous and decided to go with long cage.

Local wrench (so take this with a grain of salt)told me the long cage
shifts smoother at the cost of picking up more debris.

Other way around as far as I've heard - shorter cage = crisper shifting, but
a long cage is needed to take up chain slack when running triple up front
and a wide range at back.

That sounds better. HOw's this though:
Long Cage = ability to suck up chain slack.
Short cage = less likely to pick up debris / get hit.
"Crisp" shifting = unaffected by cage length because movement of the
cage for shifting is found at the joint of the cage and the rest of
the derailleur (not to mention movement is perpendicular to cage
swing).

Nope! Heh...

Seriously, the long cage tends to flop about more than the short cage -
there's enough play in all the der. buuchings when new, and more develops
very quickly - the long cage seems to exaggerate the effects of this on
shifting. Oh, 'IME' ',;~}~
