Not unusual, since we all know by now that Lance favors a higher cadence. Fly-weights often turn the big gear because they can.

According to Vaughters, he advised Mayo to take it easy on the early part, go hard on the last part. Looks like Mayo may have just been spinning at the 9 Km mark (as GW notes.)
This is generally my approach to climbs, get spinning a few Km before the worst to get the heartrate up then go 100% over the last bit of the climb. Don't recall where I picked up that idea, but it sure works better for me than trying to hammer all the way up. I'm no billygoat.
