Sorry I don't know anything about Open4 (besides it being a predecessor to
Open Pro), but I wouldn't use any rim for a good main wheel unless I had a
source of more of the same or rims with same effective rim diameter
(perhaps +/- ~1mm) to replace worn/broken rim, so check the ERD and what
else is available with that ERD. It's so much easier to reuse exsiting
spokes and do a rim transplant rather than start again with another set.

Also check the weight of the rim and whether it has double eyelets or not.

I did have Open4's and got on fine with 'em, IIRC they had double eyelets.
The Open Pros I now have look very similar in section but with machined
brake surfaces (maybe later Open4's had machined brake surfaces too for all
I know).

Open 4's were very similar, the same design but anodised on the braking
surface (from memory the top price ones had machined surfaces). I have just
sold a 10 year old bike with them and the anodising had not worn off in that
time so they last very well - in comparison my open pros rims have worn in 3
years and I have just this afternoon had to change them. Recommend both
types though they build up light and strong.

I had an MA40 with anodised braking surfaces. Braking was [censored] until the
anodising wore off, whereas it's excellent with Open Pros from day one.
Hard anodised rims are also more likely to crack.

Received wisdom for hard anodised mtb rims used to be that braking would
improve once the anodising had worn through (which wouldn't normally take
long in proper mtb usage). Of course with the uptake of machined rims and
subsequent popularity of discs this is moot.

My previous road bike had hard anodised Open 4's and although after nigh on
10 years the anodising had barely worn through I never felt the brakes
(single pivot Campag Athenas) inadequate, I s'pose it's down to expectation
and usage. Subjectively my current road bike brakes feel a little sharper
(dual pivot Ultegra on Open Pros) and I suppose if the switch was the other
way I might feel the old brakes lacking.
In contrast both types of rim brake I've used on mtbs always felt lacking
once it got wet & muddy, hooray for discs :-)

I think mine were about 12 years old and I must have averaged 4K miles a
year on them and the anodising was only just wearing on the rear rim. But I
never had any concerns about braking. Although I'm having problems getting
the rear brake to bite on my open pro's in the wet and can't work out why.
So perhaps a change of pads is indicated.

I have also joined CTC recently.
Does anybody ride with the CTC?

I have decided to use Open4 rims with some Bontrager/DTSwiss hubs.
They will be my first pair of self-built 700c wheels!
