Maverick: More efficient climbing than stable-platform?

Greg, I was surprised you skipped over Monique's whole thread about
considering buying a Palomino. Nice vacation? ;-)

Pete, a lot's been posted on a.m-b about Maverick suspension. Google my
name or G.T. to find many of the threads (I like mine, Greg's not
impressed, but I'm sure you figured that out. :-) )

Having put about six hours in on one over the weekend, I can say that it's
definately not a gimmick.

My understanding is that a URT stops working when you get out of the saddle;
this thing is there and working when you're 100% on the saddle, 100% off, and
everywhere in-between. And it *feels* very much like my hardtail when I come
into a hill spinning and then jump up 4 gears and stand on it...very tight.

Dunno if it's any more efficient than my Isis/Romic...but it sure feels a lot
tighter and smooths out the bumps every bit as well....maybe even better on
those stutter bumps where the ground is frozen or dried-out lumpy clay.

Now I've got to come out of the closet and confess to getting one too.

My basis of comparison is my Ellsworth Isis/Romic shock that I hope to A/B it
with as soon as I get my other rear wheel fixed.

Frankly I like it. Maybe my Ellsworth was coming up on pivot bearing
replacement time or something...but this thing feels *tight* compared.

It's also a lot easier to track stand on and to do the thing where you lean
forward and swing the tail around - not that I can actually *do* it...but my
attempts feel a lot more secure.

I also like the hard-tail feel when getting out of the saddle on a hill.

If somebody put electrodes in the pleasure center of my brain and recorded
outputs while riding the two bikes I don't think there'd be *that* much of a
diff because each bike has it's own characteristics....but I *do* like the
Maverick sus....

thread because a Maverick has to have discs, right? When the energy runs

Yes, I agree - poorly written.

What I should add is that the sus still works when going over bumps
out of the saddle. It also feels more bob-free when I'm trying to
spin up a hill compared to my Ellsworth/Romic. "Trying" because I
have a really lousey spin...sort of "square"... If really concentrate
and pedal round strokes on the Ellsworth, there's hardly any bob
(evidenced by looking at the shock)...but when I revert to my usual,
it bobs noticibly....OTOH, the Maverick linkage doesn't appear to bob.
It must bob a little, though, because the squareness of my pedal
stroke gets mitigated....not completely but somewhat.

I did a boltover from my hardtail.

Managed to get the total weight up to 33 pounds - same as my Ellsworth.

Definately a one-off:

- Rohloff hub (2 additional pounds)
- Marzocchi Pro ETA fork
- Haro magnesium BMX pedals (probably another 6oz min over clipless)
- 180mm Hope C2 on the front
- 160mm Avid mech on the back
- WTB Mutano Raptors (another pound?)

I tried running the FitKit specs and, indeed, they are clearly more efficient
when climbing or pedaling on the level...but too hard on my neck after a couple
hours and too unstable-feeling on steep descents... so right now I've got the
bars up 2cm and back an inch from FitKit. I'm thinking about going back
another inch, back down to spec, and then using bar ends for climbing and/or
level ground.

The dealer said something about this being the "deluxe" shock.

If 'bob' means unwanted sus movement while pedaling; I'd say that bob
is less than 1/5th of my Ellsworth Isis/Romic....maybe even less...I'm
tempted to say zero, but I know there has to be some because my square
pedaling style gets smoothed off somewhat compared to on my hard tail.

If 'bob' means how well or poorly it stays hooked up when going over
rough ground under power, I haven't really given it a workout yet.

Those Mavericks look chill...wouldn't mind trying one out,
