The road turns to the summit turns to gravel after the visitor's
center at 9200 feet.

You might have more fun cycling to the top of Haleakala on Maui. It's
paved all the way to the summit at 10023 feet.

Its packed crushed lava. Okay for climbing, but it must be scary on the
way down. I read an account from some guy who did the entire route on
his Bike Friday with skinny 20" tires.

Isn't there a downhill running ultra-marathon?

not a race, but still extreme climbing and descending. I hear the last day
of this ride is a 90 mile descent.

They had the inaugural race last year, but only to the end of the paved road
at 9200ft. Plans are to have an option to go to the top next year. See

Cycle to the Sun on Maui is a great race climbing 10,000ft in 26 miles.
